Standup Paddleboards Won't Be at Lake Audubon in 2013

No agreement yet between Reston Association and Surf Reston.

Looking to take a standup paddleboard lesson on Lake Audubon? You will probably have to wait till next year.

Reston Association Parks and Recreation Director Larry Butler said that the agreement with Surf Reston Standup Paddleboard Adventures will likely go into effect next summer rather than this summer.

"With fall almost upon us we have decided to craft the agreement over the fall and winter and kick things off (assuming a suitable agreement is struck) at the beginning of paddle boarding season in 2014," he said.

Earlier this summer, Reston Association's Board of Directors passed a motion to allow to allow Surf Reston Standup Paddleboard Adventures to do business from summer 2013 through Fall 2014 at the all-residential lake.
Many directors said they thought the limited term would allow the board to determine (and hear from residents) whether there was any negative impact.

After receiving many complaints from Lake Audubon area residents that the operation would cause problems at the lake, South Lakes Director Richard Chew presented the idea that the board should reconsider its decision. However, the board stuck with its approval.

Surf Reston owners plan on offering about right paddleboards for lessons several times weekly.

Butler said delaying the agreement will give time for RA "to address the many concerns."
