SLHS Advances Several to Swim Finals

Barbee, Sennett, Obando lead Seahawks on Day 1 of VHSL State Meet at George Mason.

On the backs of the T-shirts of the South Lakes girls at the 2012 ViHSL AAA Swimming and Diving Championships: “8 Girls and Only One Barbee."

Eight girls and one boy, Tiger Barbee, qualified for the meet, which began Friday at George Mason University’s Jim McKay Natatorium.

Senior Tiger Barbee had a good showing in the preliminaries Friday night.  He qualified for States in two individual events, and in the preliminaries he swam well enough to advance to the finals in both events.

 Barbee ended up 14th in the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 48.71. He placed 7th overall in the 200-yard Freestyle with a time of 1:43.99, which was faster than his “seed” time.

Senior Emily Sennett, the only State qualifier from SLHS from last year, will also move into the finals on Saturday night after two solid individual performances on Friday night during the Preliminaries.

In the 200-yard Individual Medley, Sennett ended up 15th overall with a time of 210.20.  She also placed 11th overall in the 100-yard Butterfly, with a time of 58.08.  Sennett was also a member of the 400-yard Free Relay Team (which ended up as a first alternate for finals) with a 17th place finish overall, and the 200-yard Free Relay Team, which placed 20th overall.

Freshman Natalie Obando will advance to the finals after placing 13th overall in the 100-yard Backstroke in the Preliminaries with a time of 59.72, which exceeded her “seed” time for States. Obando was also a member of the 400-yard Free Relay Team with Sennett which placed 17th overall.  She also swam in the 200-yard Medley Relay (backstroke leg) (24th), and the 200-yard Free Relay (20th).

Senior Sierra Scoggin placed 18th overall in the 200-yard Individual Medley, which places her as second alternate for the finals.  She was also a member of the 400-yard Free Relay Team (which ended up as a first alternate for Finals) with a 17th place finish overall, and the 200 Medley Relay Team (butterfly leg) (24th).

In team accomplishments, the SLHS Girl’s 400-yard Freestyle Relay Team ended up 17th overall in the Preliminaries Friday night, landing them a spot as first alternates for Saturday night’s finals.  The team consists of:  Senior Emily Sennett, freshman Madeleine Daum, freshman Natalie Obando and senior Sierra Scoggin.  

The SLHS Girl’s 200-yard Medley Relay Team ended up 24th in the Preliminaries Friday night.  The team consisted of:  freshman Natalie Obando (backstroke), senior Rachel Berman (breaststroke), senior Sierra Scoggin (butterfly), and freshman Madeleine Daum (freestyle).  

The SLHS Girl’s 200-yard Freestyle Relay Team ended up 20th in the Preliminaries Friday night.  The team consists of senior Emily Sennett, freshman Kaylyn Macaluso, freshman Natalie Obando and freshman Madeleine Daum.  

Sophomore Sasha Avilov, who swam an outstanding 24.03 in the 50-Free at Regionals to move forward to the State Championships in that event, as well as in team relay events, was sidelined from competition after an injury in volleyball practice required ACL surgery on Thursday.

Freshman Sabrina Groves, who also qualified for states, was not able to participate for health reasons as well. 

The finals begin at 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10.
