Environmental issues top my list of concerns and are the focus of my volunteer work in our community.  In addition to working on the Sustainable Reston project of the Fairfax Coalition for Smarter Growth, I'm active in Reston Environmental Action (REACT) and with Reston Association.

Sustainable Reston envisions a Reston that is self sufficient, environmentally sustainable, and able to withstand the triple external threats of peak oil, climate change and economic disruption.  We look forward to working with all Restonians to realize this vision for Reston.

I'm an avid vegetable and fruit gardener and have recently started canning my own food - both from the garden and from farmers markets.  (In the interests of full disclosure, I work part time for Smart Markets Farmers Markets in Reston and Oakton.)

I've been a Reston resident since 1977, but did spend 15 years during the 1978-1996 timeframe living in Western Europe.  Many of the ideas I picked up in Europe could help make our community more sustainable:  neighborhood compost bins, trash fees based on the amount of trash you put out for pick up, public transit, etc...
