About Bruce

I've been a Reston resident since moving here in 1979. For the next 20 years I worked for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, commuting to work daily on a bicycle. During that time I rode approximately 30,000 miles just getting to work.

In 1999 I took Amtrak to San Diego, CA where I fullfilled a lifetime goal and joined 13 other cyclists who spent the next two months riding to St. Augustine, FL. We carried our own gear, camping at night and preparing our own meals.

After returning to Reston (by train from Florida) I worked in local government for a few years, then worked for a local bike shop. In 2005 I formed Fairfax Advocates for Better Bicycling. We meet monthly at the Patrick Henry Library in Vienna. Our main goal is to make bicycling an integral part of the transportation network of Fairfax County. Read our blog at http://fabb-bikes.blogspot.com/.

I currently teach classes in bicycle skills, maintenance, and bike commuting.

Hey Bruce -- have you seen the painting job on the stretch of Soapstone that runs from Lawyers to South Lakes? OMG -- add teen drivers around the high school and night time and cyclists are insane to think that those lines are going to help them in anyway. From what I'm hearing, all they're doing is promoting contempt for cyclists -- as if we instead of DOT draw those things! Yeah, I'm a bit bummed.
