How You Can Help Oklahoma Tornado Victims

Monster storm flattened Oklahoma City suburb of Moore Monday afternoon, where dozens are reported dead.

Dozens of people—including schoolchildren—were killed Monday when a massive tornado Monday afternoon ripped through the town of Moore, OK, a suburb of Oklahoma City. The tornado, initially classified as an EF-4, means wind speeds up to 200 miles per hour whipped through the town of about 56,000, flattening much in its path. Initial reports of 51 people killed in the tornado have been revised to 24 people, but the devastation is widespread. How you can help tornado victims: is your Reston-based group organizing anything for Oklahoma storm victims? Tell us the comments.

Ken Plum Kicks Off 2013 Re-Election Run

If re-elected, delegate will be longest-serving Virginia House member.

Supporters of Del. Ken Plum (D-36th) gathered at Midtown on Tuesday as Plum kicked off his run for re-election to the Virginia House of Delegates. Plum, a Reston resident, has served in the Virginia House since 1982, and if he is re-elected will be the longest-serving delegate. The current longest-serving delegate, Lacey Putney, has been in office since 1962 but is not running again in 2013. So far, Plum has no challenger in the Novermber, 2013 election. Plum talked to his constituents about gun laws, mental health, education reform (including de-emphasizing standardized testing), same-sex marriage (he would like to eliminate the constitutional amendment that states marriage is between one man and one woman) and immigration reform. Yes, I have to agree. My teens were at sports and I was the chauffeur, but we were all with Ken in spirit. They've written Ken as part of school civic projects and have been happy to receive good replies that concurred with their views. And they are impressed that Mom knows Ken in person! Ken is a treasure -- to the extent all politics are local, he makes all politics fell like "hometown."   more ›

The only purpose that building fulfills is to make cheap and fast money for a developer and nothing more. Someone somewhere in the county, be it residents or elected officials (HIGHLY UNLIKELY!!!!) needs to start examining the actual economics of development, and in particular, how much is warranted. Although we keep hearing about the "demand" for massive structures and massive development and …   more ›

Where Does VA Rank for Cyclists?

The state's policies and advocacy for cyclists earned it a No. 16 ranking from the League of American Bicyclists.

Virginia is one of the best states in the country in which to bike, according to new rankings from the League of American Bicyclists. But it still lags behind some other states in the Mid-Atlantic region. A combination of state policies and programs — including a state bicycle plan and a "Share the Road" campaign — and an active state bicycle advocacy group helped the state earn No. 16, behind places like Washington state, Colorado, Oregon and Massachusetts. Still, neighboring states fared better on the rankings list: Delaware was 5, Maryland was 11 and Pennsylvania was 15. The League created a list of 10 signs that show progress on bikeability for states, including more than 1 percent of the commuters using bikes, a measure of success …
