South Lakes Turf Field Plan Hits a Rough Spot

Reston Soccer Association's major pledge issue may put project in jeopardy.

The quest to build two synthetic turf athletic fields at South Lakes High School has hit a snag just weeks before money needs to be in hand for a planned late-May groundbreaking. South Lakes appeared to have everything in place to build the two fields beginning this spring. However, sources within the project say that Reston Soccer Association has balked at donating the $250,000 it pledged for the $1.4 million project. Reston Soccer's pledge would be added to the partnership, which includes a  $175,000 grant from Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services; $1.1 million from the Fairfax County Park Authority; $50,000 from Reston Association; $25,000 from Reston Youth Association (football); $30,000 from South Lakes High School …

The fees were raised this year again for travel and aren't scholarships paid by the county with RSA still charging $25 fee for that. They are for travel teams. Why not post the RSA financials so members can see where the money is going - that way all questions/doubts are put to rest.   more ›

Should Turf Fields Be Mandatory?

While South Lakes has been organizing to build two synthetic turf fields, two Maryland state legislators are proposing all schools in one county install the surface.

As South Lakes High School works on raising enough money to build two turf fields at the school, across the river in Maryland there is proposed legislation to make turf fields mandatory at all Prince George's County high schools, reports the Washington Post. The bill, introduced by Del. Jay Walker (D-Prince George’s) and Sen. Douglass J.J. Peters (D-Prince George’s), would require all of the county’s public high schools to install artificial turf by the end of 2018. Turf fields allow sports to miss fewer practices or games due to weather. About a third of Fairfax County Public High Schools have turf fields. The pros and cons of mandatory turf fields have been a hot topic for discussion among residents in PG County the last few weeks. Some …

It's really quite simple for me. If Reston won't let me replace my front lawn with artificial turf, why should FCPS/SLHS be able to do it?   more ›

RA Votes to Give $50K To SLHS Turf Effort

Board says donation to two synthetic turf fields at South Lakes High School shows support of the community's children.

Reston Association's Board of Directors voted Thursday to give no more than $50,000 to the effort to build two synthetic turf fields at South Lakes High School. The donation depends on board approval of an upcoming memorandum of understanding between the partners (SLHS, Reston Youth Association Football, Reston Community Center and Reston Soccer) that better understands how RA will be able to use the fields. RA says its donation will come from a budget amendment. The board also discussed its support being contingent on the partners raising enough money for two fields at the school, not one. RA's board had pledged $100,000 nearly a year ago, but it is rescinding that offer, as well as a plan approved last year to have the donation come from…

I offerred to serve on RA's Board and you opposed me, Bill. What never changes is Reston's getting shorted by FCPA. I'm laughing all the time, Bill, especially after I read another of your excuses for neglecting Reston or remember the foolishness of the Browns Chapel megagym and parking garage.   more ›

RA To Vote on $50K Turf Contribution Thursday

Reston Association weighs funding to help build two synthetic turf sports fields at South Lakes High School.

Reston Association's board of directors will vote Thursday whether to pledge $50,000 to help build artificial turf fields at South Lakes High School. This is a reduction from the $100,000 the board unanimously approved for this cause earlier this year. However, South Lakes was not chosen last spring for a $175,000 Fairfax County grant to build the field and the issue was shelved. For nearly a year, South Lakes has been looking to build two turf fields  - one at the stadium, the other on the field area between South Lakes and Langston Hughes Middle School) - at a cost of about $1.4 million.   Earlier in 2012, the project received commitments from Reston Soccer Association ($250,000), South Lakes' discretionary funds ($30,000) and Reston …

If only these fields our kids play on WERE grass, but they are in fact barron compacted clay and rocks in most places. Go take a look at the terrible field conditions that exist at Langston Hughes and compare that to the state of the art rubberized turf intended to repace it. NO contest!   more ›
