Update: Herndon Prank Suspension Stands

FCPS rules Chris Shoemaker still barred from graduation for part in baby oil spill.

Chris Shoemaker, one of three Herndon High School seniors barred from graduation for partipating in a senior prank last week, received final word from the school system Wednesday that the suspension stands. Shoemaker was suspended for seven days — including Thursday's graduation -  for his part in a prank to spill baby oil in the hallways of the school. A total of six students were suspended, but three of them received a three-day ban and will be able to walk in the ceremony at George Mason University at 2 p.m. The Shoemaker family was seeking the appeal because they felt all the boys should have the same suspension. Chris' father, Bob, also said that a school security officer changed his son's written statement. "My son wrote a statement …

'I Am Extremely Sorry,' Herndon Senior Says

How a senior prank went wrong—and a confusing series of events led to #Lettheboyswalk2012.

Ashkan Naedri says he would make a speech apologizing to the whole school. Chris Shoemaker says he regrets everything. His father says an appropriate penalty would be to make Chris and five other boys accused of plotting a baby oil prank last week at Herndon High School scrub the urinals with a toothbrush while their classmates watched. Just let them walk at graduation, they say. Shoemaker and Naderi are two of three Herndon High School seniors who have been suspended for seven days and barred from Thursday's graduation ceremonies for their part in the senior prank last Wednesday. Three other students accused of helping plan—but not participating in—the prank have been suspended for three days and will be able to take part in graduation. …

Given that they were aware of the consequences before they decided to try this prank, I agree that the school should carry this out, lest students would walk all over adminstration. It's not like they don't actually get to graduate; they just can't walk, right? That being said, however, I believe the school could and should consider in the future to implement more fitting consequences to this …   more ›

Herndon Students Protest Punishment for Pranks Via Twitter

Seniors barred from graduation ceremonies after allegedly spray painting the outside of the school and pouring baby oil on the floors on June 6.

A group of Herndon High School seniors have been told they won’t be able to walk at their graduation because of pranks they played at the school on June 6 and students have started a twitter-based protest. A letter sent to parents from the school says, “Throughout the day we experienced a number of unfortunate events that caused a major disruption to our school day.” Principal William Bates told parents that he was notified by the building engineer at about 5 a.m. that the exterior of the building had been vandalized with paint. The students also poured baby oil on the floors in the main hallway, in the gym lobby and on two staircases. The letter says students also pulled a fire alarm causing the entire school to evacuate on a day that …
