Election Day Wrap Up: Incumbents, Numbers and the Balance in Richmond

Officials still counting votes to see who will have the majority in Virginia senate.

Reston voters showed support to incumbent candidates on Tuesday, returning Sen. Janet Howell (D-32nd), Del. Ken Plum (D-36th) and Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins to office for another term. Overall, it was good news for Democrats as endorsee Pat Hynes was elected to the Fairfax County School board's Hunter Mill seat, and all three at-large school board seats - incumbent Ilryong Moon and newcomers Ryan McElveen and Ted Velkoff - were Democrat endorsees. Democrats Board of Supervisor Chair Sharon Bulova and Sherrif Stan Barry also were re-elected. Here is other election news you need to know: Still counting - The state board of election is still counting votes to see which way the balance of the state senate will tip. The Democrats …

Plum, Howell Lead Incumbents Back Into Office

A good night for Democrats in Reston, Hunter Mill.

Sen. Janet Howell and Del. Ken Plum were easily re-elected to their Virginia General Assembly seats on Tuesday, leading a Democratic sweep in Reston-area elections. Howell, representing the 32nd District since 1992, defeated Republican challenger Patrick Forrest by a margin of nearly 20 percent (as of 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, with 52 percent of precincts reporting). Plum, who has represented the 36th District since 1982, beat Mac Cannon, 61 percent to 38 percent (47 percent of precincts reporting). Plum said he was pleased with the Democrats' results on Election Day. "The Democrats are in tune with voters in Fairfax County," Plum said at the county democrats' party in Fairfax. "I am hoping the rest of Virginia will recognize that. "The news in …

When one party deliberately attacks another party it doesn't show the voter the desire to vote for that party. It is definitely a real turn off for me and several other voters i have talked to. The next time someone comes to my door at "Oak Park" and ask my Son if he knows if i vote Democrat or Republican ? I will report that person( who had no right to ask the question) to the proper party. Not …   more ›

Voter Turnout Likely To Hover Around 30 Percent, Elections Officials Say

County Democrats say they're seeing higher turnout among their voters.

Despite reports of steady voter turnout early this morning, election officials said this afternoon numbers varied wildly across Fairfax County, from 6.9 percent to nearing 40 percent in areas with "hotly contested races."  Sonia Skipper, an employee in the office of the registrar, said as of 2:30 p.m., there was no way to calculate an average of how many of the county's 640,689 "active" voters had cast their vote, but she believed turnout would hit about 30 percent, or about 192,206 voters. Elections officials at polls had anticipated 20 to 30 percent of voters would cast their ballot today, a percentage in line with the turnout for the 2007 elections, Registrar Cameron Quinn told Patch. The highest turnout Skipper has seen in a local …

A Sunny Start For A Day At The Polls

Reston's short lines, long list of reasons for casting a vote.

Election Day in Reston started with beautiful weather and light-but-steady poll traffic as voters went to the polls Tuesday to vote on new school board members, state legislators and a $252 million bond referendum. In 2009 -- a year in which many local races were contested -- voter turnout was 40.4 percent statewide, according to the state board of elections. But "I'll be surprised if we break 30 percent countywide," Cameron Quinn, in charge of elections, told Patch Tuesday morning. That figure is consistent with voter turnout in 2007.  The county, as of Nov. 1, had 640,689 "active" voter registrations. That figure would be just a little lower than four years ago, she said. This year, some citizens voted the ticket, as they said they …

Campaign Mailing Blasts Senate Candidate Forrest

Howell pledges to find out who is behind card that says Forrest is "coming out of the liberal closet."

Hunter Mill voters on Friday received a campaign postcard from an organization called Our Heritage USA calling Republican state senate candidate Patrick Forrest “openly homosexual” and says he is endorsed by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund. A Washington Post story says it can't find any evidence that Our Heritage USA even exists. The mailer says Forrest is  a “liberal Republican” who supports illegal immigration reform, worked for President Obama’s transition team and has voted in Democratic primaries. “A liberal Republican like Patrick Forrest is a greater threat to the conservative agenda than a Democrat will ever be,’’ it reads. Forrest, who is openly gay, has accused incumbent  Democratic Sen. Janet Howell, of making an issue of his …

Private Person, Will Radle and Others: Thanks for your comments. It will be two years or more before we see the final Phase 1 rail capital cost estimates. Phase 2 cost estimates are set to be provided by MWAA in February 2012. Remember, to see whether taxes are increased, maintained or lowered, we need to look at the assessment and the rate. She has been increasing the dollars you pay. When I share my plan to lower real estate taxes from $1.07 to a target 93 cents, I am using a static number (using a specific point in time, specifically the budget we just adopted). Basically, we will lower real estate taxes you pay by …   more ›
