Full slate of events to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
There is a full lineup of events in Reston on Sunday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and ask the community "Are we keeping the promise." Where noted, some of the events at Reston Community Center require advance registration. NOTE: The Keynote address and luncheon are sold out. RCC will team with several community organizations, including Southgate Community Center, Reston Association, Reston Interfaith and The Closet for volunteer service projects. Projects will be held indoors and outdoors (weather-permitting) throughout Reston and are open to adults and children. Volunteers will be treated to lunch. Combination of holiday and Inauguration Day means mix of closed government offices, while other Fairfax County workers will be working.
Most of Fairfax County's government offices — including courts and schools — will be closed Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. What will be open? Park Authority RECenters will be open with regular hours. Trash pickup will also be on a regular schedule. Fairfax Connector will operate on a modified schedule: Bus routes with weekday service will operate according to the weekday schedule, except routes 335, 394, 395, 585, 595, and 597 which will not operate. Routes 335, 394, 395, 585, 595, and 597 do not operate when a holiday weekday schedule is in effect. But because Monday is also Inauguration Day, many Fairfax County staff will be on duty, including public safety personnel, as well as staffing the county’s Emergency Operations …

There are a limited number of seats available for the Reston Community Center's 28th Annual Martin Luther King Day lunch and keynote speech with former NAACP chair Julian Bond. The lunch is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods. Admission is free, but advance registration is required. Click here for more information and registration info.
