Giving Circle of HOPE Plans Big Award for '14

To honor the non-profit's 10th anniversary, group plans for new members and a big grant for one deserving organization.

Nearly 10 years ago, four Reston women got together to pool a bit of money to help area people in need. The Giving Circle of HOPE eventually grew to 100 women and more than 100 grants given to local non-profits. For its 10th anniversary, the Giving Circle is looking to have a bigger impact. The group intends to give away a $25,000 "transformational grant" in 2014, says co-founder Diana Katz. Grants historically have been much smaller. In late 2012, for instance, the Giving Circle awarded 11 grants of $5,000 each to Alternative House, Computer C.O.R.E., Friends of Guest House, GRACE Ministries, Herndon-Reston FISH, among others. Eleven Nonprofits Earn Giving Circle Grants

Reston's Giving Circle of HOPE will give $5,000 awards to area orgnaizations.

Reston's Giving Circle of HOPE announced it will give $55,000 to 11 area nonprofits in the upcoming year's grant cycle. Receiving the $5,000 grants:  Alternative House, Computer C.O.R.E., Friends of Guest House, GRACE Ministries, Herndon-Reston FISH, Literacy Council of NoVa, Manassas Midwifery, NoVa Therapeutic Riding Program, OAR, Packaged with Care, and Stroke Comeback Center. This is the ninth grant cycle for the Giving Circle of HOPE, a Reston-based group of more than 100 members that was founded in 2004 to promote volunteerism and philanthropy.  Members seek to make a difference in the community by contributing their time, talents and money to projects which encourage self-sufficiency and well-being among people in need in Northern …

Coldwell Banker Manager Helps Hungry Kids

Reston's Tara Winfree honored by MRIS

Reston's Tara Winfree was honored by the Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, Inc. (MRIS), the Mid-Atlantic Multiple Listing Service, as the first winner of the Adam D. Cockey Jr. Community Leader Award. Winfree, Branch Vice President of Manassas Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, helped start Helping Hungry Kids programs in Forest Edge and Lake Anne Elementary Schools. Helping Hungry Kids was founded by the Giving Circle of Hope's Sandy Amato several years ago at Dogwood Elementary School. Volunteers make weekend food bags and distribute them to children in need so they will have something to eat on the weekend. MRIS will donate $2,000 in Winfree's honor to Helping Hungry Kids. Making Bowls That Will Not Be Empty

Ceramic artists help Reston's Giving Circle of Hope for Empty Bowls fundraiser.

Potters from Clay Connection, Reston Community Center, Herndon Community Center, Clay Cafe of Chantilly and Bowman Arts and Crafts Center are busy making handcrafted ceramic soup bowls as their way of supporting an Empty Bowls fundraiser on April 13. The event will help fight hunger and help those facing food emergencies. RCC ceramics instructor Deb Joder says she likes giving back. “We enjoy using our artistic talent to help those in our community who need help making ends meet," she said.  Cathy Water, Empty Bowls chair, says she appreciates the help - and one-of-a-kind pottery, “We couldn’t do this event without their beautiful bowls," she said. Giving Circle of HOPE To Honor 2012 Grantees

Reston group gives out 10 $5,000 grants.

Reston's Giving Circle of HOPE will honor this year's grantees at a community reception Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Midtown of Reston. The philanthropic group awarded 10 $5,000 grants to local organizations. The Giving Circle of Hope was founded in Reston in 2004 Members donate money, but also make decisions in how it is spent.  Members seek to make a difference in the community by contributing their time, talents, and money to projects which encourage self-sufficiency and well-being among people in need in Northern Virginia.
