Hudgins: Wiehle Traffic Won't Be Worse

Hunter Mill Supervisor tells WTOP gridlock after Metro opens won't be worse than what is already here.

Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins tells WTOP that she does not forsee big traffic problems on Wiehle Avenue after the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station opens later this year. "I live one block from Wiehle Avenue, and I don't think it's going to have any more gridlock than we have today," Hudgins said. "Will there be some hard days in the beginning? I think you're right. But the larger part of the message is that it's an asset coming here." Hudgins' comments came in a story the radio station did on the potential for gridlock when the Silver Line opens. Jim, I agree with you that the bus routes are not well thought out. The key to making the Whiele Avenue station work is to have a coordinated set of bus routes connecting all parts of Reston. Right now and the planned bus routes do not include the east end of Lawyers Road or the South end of Twin Branches Road. Good bus routes will encourage people not to drive to the station. RCA Report Offers Fixes For Wiehle Congestion

Advocacy group predicts congestion ahead, despite - or maybe because of - Metro's Wiehle-Reston East station opening in December 2013.

The Reston Citizens Association is offering some solutions to what it predicts will be a huge traffic problem when Metrorail's Silver Line opens in December 2013. In a new report titled Wiehle Metro Station Access: Congestion Ahead, the citizens advocacy group says Fairfax County has not made Wiehle station readily accessible to all who might want to get there. "Some important improvements are being made around the station, in part in conjunction with the Comstock (parking garage) project," the report says. "However, several important projects have not been built and are unlikely to be completed during the period the Wiehle station is the end of the line."
