PHOTO: Connolly Begins Third Term

Speaker of the House John Boehner swore in Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th) Thursday for Connolly's third term in office. Connolly was re-elected Nov. 6, beating Republican Chris Perkins. Connolly was surrounded  by family and friends at his swearing-in ceremony on Capitol Hill. The oath of office officiated by the speaker is ceremonial, conducted after an official swearing-in of the entire Congress at noon on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives. The first day of the 113th Congress Thursday came on the heels of a tumultuous debate over the "fiscal cliff," voted on by the House on New Year's Day. DOJ Approval Means Reston Now in 11th

Redrawn congressional maps move Reston to Gerry Connolly territory.

The U.S. Department of Justice last week approved Virginia's congressional redistricting plan, allowing the new district boundaries to take effect for June primaries and the November general election. The federal approval ends a lengthy and sometimes contentious redistricting process that began last year and stalled when the Virginia General Assembly could not reach an agreement on a congressional district map. When Republicans took control of the state Senate in January, a GOP-designed plan passed both houses and was signed into law by Gov. Bob McDonnell (R). Richard -this article is just to tell folks that the DOJ vote makes it official. The news part of Reston moving to Connolly's district has been reported repeatedly for a year now. I am sure we will be speaking with him soon, but a Patch op ed is a good idea. I will see what we can do.   more ›
