Doors opened for Black Friday sales on Thursday for shopperss to get a jump on Black Friday barely before the Thanksgiving leftovers had been put away. Reston's Target and Best Buy has lines around the building when the doors opened at 9 p.m. Eager shoppers at Best Buy bided their time playing soccer in the parking lot and snuggling up in blankets. The first in line at Target had gotten there before sometime 7 p.m. on Thursday, while the first in line at Best Buy said he arrived at 7 p.m on Tuesday in hopes of scoring a bargain on a new TV.

FCFD: Thanksgiving is Busy Fire Day

Keep your holiday incident free by following a few tips.

Thanksgiving Day is the busiest day for the fire service, says the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.  More property damage and lives are lost in residential structure fires on Thanksgiving Day than any other day of the year. The increase applies mostly to cooking fires in family homes.  An estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings are reported to U.S. fire departments each year and cause an estimated average of 5 deaths, 25 injuries, and $121 million in property loss. Over the last several years, turkey fryer fires have contributed significantly to the increase in cooking fires. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries, and destruction of property. The following safe…

How to Brine a Turkey

Brining a turkey takes time and effort, but results in a moist and flavorful bird.

“Brining” has always been the secret method that chefs use to make a moist and flavorful baked turkey. Many years ago I asked a chef why her turkey meat tasted so good, and she led me back to the kitchen’s large, walk-in cooler filled with birds soaking in a fragrant bath. I immediately got her recipe. But what is brining? There are two types: wet and dry. Dry brining is simply rubbing a turkey in a salt and herb mixture and letting it sit (refrigerated of course) for many hours (usually about one hour per pound). It's somewhat easier and more convenient than the alternative wet option, and advocates insist dry brining makes for a bird with a firmer meat texture, and the skin is sensational. Wet brining, which does seem to be the most …

RCC Annual Food Drive Starts Monday

Donate soon to help others on Thanksgiving.

Reston Community Center's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, in partnership with Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, will begin on Monday. Donations will be accepted Nov. 5 through Nov. 19, and volunteers will sort and deliver donations on Thanksgiving Day. The Food Drive was previously planned to begin on Nov. 1 and was delayed due to the impacts of Superstorm Sandy. Look for donation bins at RCC's Hunters Woods and Lake Anne locations, as well as at many Reston businesses. The drive leads up to a community-wide volunteer event on Thanksgiving Day, when volunteers will sort all of the donations at RCC and then deliver them to Reston Interfaith’s food storage facility.  “The Thanksgiving Food Drive gives us an …

First the Meal, Then the Deal

"Black Friday" creeping into Thanksgiving Thursday. Will you take part?

Ah, the traditions of Thanksgiving past. You know, like lining up when stores open at 5 a.m. the day after the holiday. Not so, anymore. Black Friday begins on Thursday now. Walmart is open all day, with Black Friday deals starting at 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Best Buy, Target and Kohls open at midnight Friday. The stores at Reston Town Center will open at 8 a.m. Friday. The National Retail Federation says 152 million people plan to shop Black Friday weekend, up from 138 million who said they planned to last year. Meanwhile, more than 190,000 have signed a Target worker's petition to protest opening the store barely after the Turkey Day leftovers have been stored. More Black Friday backlash - there has been an Occupy Black Friday movement, …
