Spectrum, Terraset Before BOS on Tuesday

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors slated to discuss and decide on two major Reston projects.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will discuss and decide the future of two Reston projects at its meeting on Tuesday. There will be a public hearing at 3:30 p.m. about redevelopment at The Spectrum shopping center. A major redevelopment has been in the works for The Spectrum for years. The application, already recommended for approval by county planning and zoning, was recently reactivated. The plan includes redevelopment of both Spectrum shopping centers, which reach from New Dominion Drive to Baron Cameron Avenue along Reston Parkway. Land Bay A (where Best Buy and the soon-to-be closed Barnes & Noble are located) is planned for 546 dwelling units, 255 hotel rooms, 172,000 square feet of office, and 62,500 square feet of retail …

Kids Speak Out on Future of Reston National

Fifth graders at Terraset Elementary use persuasive writing exercise to outline reasons for keeping Reston National Golf Course as open space.

The future of Reston National Golf Course has been a hot topic since it was discovered earlier this year that RN Golf Management, the course's owner, filed an inquiry with Fairfax County Zoning to see whether the course is zoned residential. While a redevelopment plan may be in the works, no plan has yet to be made public. But with a Board of Zoning Appeals hearing coming up on Jan. 30, residents have mobilized with an online petition; a grassroots advocacy group (Rescue Reston); a rally; and other efforts to keep the 166-acre public golf course as open space and not residential development. Evan Millar, a fifth-grade teacher at Terraset Elementary School, posed the problem to his students - many of whom live on or near Reston National - …

Will School Renovations Hurt Environment?

Consultant finds stormwater and other environmental issues in FCPS' plans for Sunrise Valley and Terraset Elementary Schools.

An environmental consulting firm has found many flaws with Fairfax County Public Schools' plans for renovation and expansion at Terraset and Sunrise Valley Elementary Schools. Both of those schools, which are more than 30 years old, are scheduled to be renovated nest year as part of FCPS' FY2012-16 Capital Improvement Plan. Mike Rolband, president of Wetland Studies and Solutions Inc., says he is "hopeful that higher-level school people will revise the plans" before construction begins. He says that the renovations at South Lakes High School several years ago were done with a "total disregard" for the environment. This time he is hoping to have an impact before it is too late, he said. Among his concerns: * The renovations increase the …

500 Trombones - Two of Them From Reston

Local residents join hundreds at Nationals Park to try and set a world record.

Jeanette Essig, Reston resident and a Fairfax County Public Schools music resource teacher, and Darien Whaley, an eighth-grade student at Langston Hughes Middle School were among the hundreds of trombone players who played in pursuit of a world record at Nationals Park Friday night. The event was organized by Arena Stage's Larry Goldberg in conjunction with the new production of Meredith Willson's The Music Man, now playing at Arena Stage. One of The Music Man's signature songs is 76 Trombones. Arena Stage said in a press release it was aiming to focus awareness on the musical education needs of children in the DC Metro area. "It was really cool having all those trombones there at once," said Darien. Said Essig, a former music teacher at …
