Seahawks beat Yorktown 3-1 at home.
The South Lakes High School's boys soccer team topped Yorktown 3-1 Tuesday in a Northern Regional first-round game at home. Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year Suli Dainkeh opened up scoring minute 24 of first half. Yorktown tied it early in the second half. In the second half, SLHS pulled ahead on an Eddie Alvarenga pass to Jhonny DeSouza. Dante Guaranica added the Seahawks' final goal late in the period. The Seahawks (16-1) will play Woodson (14-3) in the next round Thursday at home at 7 p.m. Note: Dylan Katz and Suli Sainkeh have been named all All-Region Team 1; Huber Letona named to All-Region Second team, and Elvin Arbaiza, Honorable Mention.

First District title for Sehawks in 17 years.
The South Lakes Seahawks boys soccer team proved that its first-place finish in the Liberty district during the regular season was no accident when it decisively defeated the Langley Saxons Friday 3-1 in the district’s finals held at McLean High School. This was this year’s second win over the Saxons, a team they had not previously beaten during this year’s senior players’ four-year tenure on the squad. Though not known for their offensive power, the Seahawks upped the pace during the playoffs, scoring five goals earlier in the week against Stone Bridge, and adding another four goals during the semifinal and final matches. Seahawk boys finish second in meet held at South Lakes.
Sophomores Maya Rodriguez and Delaney Wickman each won three events to lead the South Lakes High School girls track team to the Liberty District Outdoor Track and Field Championship Wednesday at SLHS. The boys team finished second to Stone Bridge with strong performances in the distance events, highlighted by the district record setting 4x800 team of Senior Michael McHugh and juniors Luis Rivas, Michael Uhrig and Michael Kerr. Rodriguez won both the 100-meter hurdles (15.75), 300-meter hurdles (47.05) and was the anchor leg on the winning 4x400. She teamed with fellow sophomores Claire Nieusma, Sydney Crutcher and junior Grace Gillen for a regional qualifying time of 4:06.30. Rodriguez was also 12th in the long jump (13-10.50). Wickman …

Soccer player earns Gatorade Virginia Player of the Year 2013.
South Lakes High School soccer player Suliman Dainkeh has been selected Virginia's 2013 Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year. Dainkeh, a midfielder who has signed with University of Maryland, heled lead the Seahawks to a 12-1 regular season (7-0 Liberty District) this year. Dainkeh scored three goals and passed for one assist through 13 games and anchored a defense that allowed just six goals. He is also a member of the U.S. Soccer Under-18 Men’s National Team. Community works to support cancer survivors, remember victims and look towards a cure with round-the-clock event at South Lakes High School.
South Lakes High School's stadium will fill with cancer survivors, their families and other community members who want to wipe out the deadly disease as the Relay for Life of Reston begins Saturday. Relay for Life Events, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, take place nationwide. Relay teams camp out overnight and take turns walking or running around a track or path at a local high school, park, or fairground. There is also a carnival-like atmosphere, with food, music and other activities. As of Tuesday, Relay for Life of Reston participants have raised more than $115,000. Seahawks boys team undefeated in Liberty District play.
The South Lakes High School boys soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 7-0 Liberty District record (12-1 overall) and the regular-season district title. The Seahawks gave up just one goal in district play this spring an six goals overall. The Seahawks are No.2 in this week's Washington Post poll. The Seahawks, winners of the school's first academic state championship, are looking towards national competition.
The South Lakes High School Speech and Debate program has earned so many honors this year, it now has its own trophy case on the second floor of the school. Among the highlights in 2012-13: The Virginia High School League Debate Championship, which is the first academic state championship in school history. The Seahawks edged out Thomas Jefferson for the title last month. "South Lakes has really developed a name for itself," says SLHS debate advisor Cheryl Finley. Finley says that with success, interest and participation in the program has also grown. The program now has about 50 students- up from just 10 a few years ago - and the speech and debate teams have gained a reputation around Northern Virginia for being well-prepared. Four …

Seahawks defeat Highlanders 15-9.
The South Lakes High School girls lacrosse team defeated the McLean Highlanders 15-9 on Wednesday night at home. The pregame ceremonies honored the six seniors on the team for their years of dedication to the lacrosse team. The seniors all played roles in the victory - goalie Emily Lipscomb anchored the defense and made numerous outstanding saves. Defender Kenna Salvatore, the lone upperclassman on defense, played hard-nosed defense while providing leadership to her young teammates. Midfielder Maria Leith dished out five assists and caught some glory of her own with two goals for a total of seven points. Sharpshooter Kenzie Hughes on attack had five goals and one assist. Can the schools handle a huge influx of residents to Reston?
Area development-watchers have been predicting a population boom for Reston as new housing opens up in conjunction with the Silver Line. Currently under construction: High-rises at Avant at Reston Town Center and across Reston Parkway at Athena Renaissance. Approved and coming sometime in the future: development at Reston Heights and at Fairway. There is expected to be new housing at the Reston-Wiehle East Metro station, as well as at the revamped Spectrum. In all, if the Reston Master Plan Task Force adopts "Scenario G" for future growth, 20,080 high-rise multi-family units are projected to yield 1,747 students, says advocacy group Reston 2020.
