Closing: Footsteps of Reston

South Lakes Village Center running store will leave on March 31.

Footsteps, the running speciality store at South Lakes Village Center, will close its doors on March 31. Owner Paul Zink says he will look for a smaller, more affordable space in Northern Virginia to reopen the store. "[South Lakes] Center has become more of a food court than the mixed use center it once was," Zink wrote in an annoucement on Reston Patch. "Footsteps is the only soft goods business left. Additionally, the going rent for the 3,000 square-foot space has made it very difficult to run a small business in these poor economic times." Zink said a more affordable rent will enable him to "compete with the chain running stores that have saturated the metro market." Footsteps is the oldest existing running specialty store in Northern …

My dog thinks of it as the strip mall with the pet store in the corner. I think of it as the beer aisle within a Safeway, within a strip mall, with totally inadequate parking.   more ›

Fundraiser for Local Boy Helps Fight Diabetes

Foster's Grille will donate 10 percent of all Tuesday sales to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Three years ago this June, Amy Lotz brought her 3-year-old son Jack to see the doctor for what the Reston mother thought was a common cold. But a few days later, Jack got worse — he was constantly thirsty and going to the bathroom; vomiting, sweaty, lethargic. A return trip to the doctor revealed Jack had type 1 diabetes, a shock to a family that had no history of the disease. Jack spent three nights in the pediatric intensive care unit that week. "I'll never forget the look on the doctor's face when he walked into the room.  I knew right away it was something serious," Lotz said. On Tuesday, Jack, now 6, and his family will team up with Foster's Grille in Vienna to raise money for the Walk To Cure Diabetes on May 20 in Leesburg, which …

Fire Officials Say South Lakes Village Center Fire Sparked by Cafesano's Brick Pizza Oven

Damage estimated at $305,000 after Monday's blaze.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says Monday's fire at South Lakes Village Center was accidentally caused by heat from Cafesano's brick oven igniting combustibles inside and near the hood and exhaust system. Firefighters were called to the scene at 8:05 a.m. Monday morning when smoke and flames were seen rising from the roof over Cafesano and Hour Eyes at 11130 South Lakes Dr. Firefighting crews gained access to the ceiling, attic, and then cut into the roof to attack the spreading fire. The incident commander called for a second alarm due to the potential of the fire spreading to other businesses. It took firefighters approximately 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, Fire and Rescue officials said. Firefighters conducted extensive overhaul …

Two Stores Remain Closed After Fire At South Lakes Village Center

Cafesano, Hour Eyes damaged in Monday morning blaze.

Cafesano and Hour Eyes at South Lakes Village Center remained closed Monday afternoon, about seven hours after a two-alarm fire on the roof. Both stores are without power, and the stores sustained damage when firefighters had to chop through the roof to get to the fire, which started in the ceiling. Cafesano employees are moving perishables from the eat-in restaurant to the catering operation about eight doors down. The eat-in restaurant may be closed for a few days, but patrons are welcome to go down to the catering stores, which offers take-out, to pick up their favorite salads, sandwiches and pizza, employees said. The entire strip from Cafesano to Pet Valu was closed until about 1 p.m. Monday, when power was restored to most of the …

Now Open at Lake Anne: Baby Blossom

Boutique features high-end items for the smallest Restonians.

Baby Blossom, a boutique that features a wide variety of items for new parents, opened Oct. 29 at Lake Anne Plaza. David and Bonnie Goldberg have owned the Baby Blossom store in Fairfax for five years. When it came time to expand, Reston was a good fit, says David Goldberg. "We have always loved Lake Anne," said Goldberg. "We have had many requests from customers from Reston, Ashburn, Sterling about opening up in the area." The store, located at 1631 Washington Plaza West, is a brightly painted addition to the historic plaza. It specializes in high-quality stroller brands such as Bugaboo, Phil & Teds and Peg Perego. The store also carries car seats, cribs, feeding accessories, toys and pretty much anything a new parent needs. While some of…

After 20 Years, Nowhere Near The Finish Line

Commonwealth Chiropractic Center is celebrating two decades of treating and training some of Reston's - and the world's - top runners.

In 1991, Ron Kulik and Neil McLaughlin were new grads from New York Chiropractic College who set out - without much of a plan - to open an office in Reston. Two decades and thousands of patients later, the two are celebrating their 20th year in business at Commonwealth Chiropractic Center and preparing several runners for Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon. Along with adjusting spines and caring for necks, Kulik and McLaughlin, both former college athletes, have become known in area running circles as people to see for training and treatment at their accompanying business, Personal Best Running. Kulik, who ran at Virginia Tech, was among the top finishers in the Marine Corps Marathon in 1991 and was also named DC Roadrunner Club runner of the …

Now Open: Reston Farm Market

After being closed for about a year, The Reston Farm Market has reopened with a fall festival that will run through mid-November. The market, located at Route 7 and Baron Cameron, was formerly Norman's Farm Market and was a popular spot year-round, but particularly for pumpkin and cider season. The re-opened, seasonal market has bounce houses for the little ones, a small petting zoo, a kids' train ride, and, of course, pumpkins and cider for sale. On the weekends, there is live entertainment and face painting. The market is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Readers - this story is from last fall. The market has since closed for good as far as I know, though it might have had something going on the last few weeks as a temporary fall festival. Sorry.   more ›
