Fairfax County Spelling Champ Into Bee Semis

Hunters Woods Elementary School fourth grader Jae Canetti has advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Jae, 10, correctly spelled "riant" and "stenohaline" in Wednesday's semifinal rounds at Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in Maryland. He was the winner of the Fairfax County Spelling Bee in March. He was runner-up a year ago. Thursday's semis will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The finals begin at 8 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN. In the first round, students took a computerized spelling test with 50 words, of which only 25 were scored.
