Local Nonprofit Part of Boston Bombing Hoax

Photo of little girl from past Virginia race co-opted in viral fib.

Organizers of the annual Joe Cassella 5K in Great Falls are outraged a photo from their race was circulating as part of a hoax in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings Monday. "We would like to clarify that the picture circulating on the web and Twitter of a little girl wearing a Joe Cassella 5K bib claiming to have been killed at the Boston marathon is being used fraudulently," the Joe Cassella Foundation wrote on its Facebook page on Tuesday. The photo was used along with the claim that the girl in the picture, age 8, died while running in Boston in honor of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting victims. The information from someone with the Twitter name @HopeforBoston (now disabled) went viral (even though children are not …

Fairfax Teachers Union Launches Safety Survey

In light of Sandy Hook shootings and ahead of Virginia General Assembly kickoff this week, union turns to members to get opinion on guns in schools and what safe schools should look like.

In the weeks since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., politicians and advocacy groups have issued recommendations for how schools can try to prevent the tragedy — which killed 26 students and school employees — from happening again. A voice so far largely absent from those discussions in Fairfax and Northern Virginia: teachers. One of Fairfax County's largest teachers unions is hoping to change that, launching Tuesday a security and schools survey asking its 4,265 members about the use of guns in schools, where the system could use extra security personnel, how safe schools are now and how to make them safer, among other topics. "What I see more and more of is politicians posturing up and taking positions …

Connolly Urges $200 Million Gun Buyback

Forty House members sign letter backing proposed program added to any end-of-the-year fiscal cliff deal.

A letter co-written by Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th), and signed by 40 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, urges Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to support an immediate $200 million gun buyback program in any end-of-the-year fiscal cliff deal. Connolly, whose district includes Reston as well as the national headquarters for the NRA, and U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch of Florida authored the letter to the House leaders.  “Gun buybacks have proven successful in communities across the nation,” Connolly and Deutch said in a “Dear Colleague” to House members. “Adding $200 million to the final compromise on the fiscal cliff could remove as many as one million guns from our streets.”  Including the …

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. There isn't even any such thing as the "gun show loophole," those are simply person to person sales done at a gun show that could also be done anywhere else. Do you advocate we close the Burger King Parking Lot Loophole? Educate yourself before looking like a fool again.   more ›

McDonnell Forms School Safety Task Force

The group will review practices, identify vulnerabilities and make recommendations.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has formed a task force that will focus on school and safety in the wake of last week’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. “Even with raw emotions still running so high, it is prudent to begin to consider reasonable policy changes,” McDonnell said in a statement Thursday. “In the aftermath of the horrific and senseless shootings, I have asked all local and state leaders that play a role in school or campus safety to review the procedures, plans, policies and resources dedicated to this effort.” The task force will lead by the Secretary of Education, the Secretary of Public Safety and the Secretary of Health and Human Resources. Representatives from law enforcement, state agencies, …

Moment of Silence For Sandy Hook Friday

Virginia Gov. McDonnell joins Connecticut governor in plans to remember victims with moment of silence Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.

One week after the tragic shootings in  at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is requesting a statewide moment of silence Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. to remember the victims. McDonnell is joining Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy in calling for a moment of silence. McDonnell is inviting all members of the public to join in the statewide moment of silence, and to join him at the Capitol Square Bell Tower in Richmond, where the bell will ring 26 times during that moment of silence. Twenty-six students and teachers were killed in the shootings that took place Friday, Dec. 14. The governor will speak briefly, prior to the moment of silence. The bell tower tolls each day to call the General Assembly into …
