Northern Virginia's first styling-only salon opens at Plaza America.
FLOW Blow Dry & Beauty Bar joined the Reston beauty salon scene on Monday, offering something different: just styling. FLOW, located at 11700 Plaza America Dr., is a blow out-only salon, where patrons can choose from styles such as the Calypso (long, loose beach waves), the FLOW (Flowing Locks of Winsomness) or the Willowy (long and sleek) for $35. While styling-only salons are popular in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and now DC, where the chain Dry Bar recently opened, FLOW is the first blow out-only salon in Northern Virginia, says owner Samira Atash. "I think Reston has stylish, beautiful women," says Atash, a Northern Virginia native who formerly worked in the fashion industry. "People have been emailing me daily, asking when …

Cleared shelves, big markdowns as store prepares for February closing.
There are huge markdowns at Reston's Barnes & Noble as the store prepares to close at the end of February. A large portion of the store's merchandise is between 30 and 50 percent off, and some shelves have been cleared of stock altogether. The store announced last month that its lease was not renewed and it would be closing at the end of February. Lerner, the owner of the Spectrum shopping center where Barnes & Noble is located, says a Container Store will open in the space in the fall of 2013. The Spectrum is also slated to undergo a massive renovation into a mixed-use, high density location. Planned redevelopment of this shopping center includes the following: Land Bay A is planned for 546 dwelling units, 255 hotel rooms, 172,000 square …

Store at Lake Anne Plaza will celebrate its longevity with party on Sunday.
In an era when books and the stores that sell them are rapidly changing, Reston's Used Book Shop has endured. The store - which opened in January 1978 - will celebrate its 35th anniversary this weekend. The store has been located at Lake Anne Plaza for two generations. For the Reston community, it has become more than a place to buy a book. Reston's Used Book Shop is home to book clubs and discussion groups and live music performances. It's also the place to go when you want to rent a boat to take out on Lake Anne. "We hope to be here 35 more years," says store co-owner Susan Burwell. Susan and her husband, Bud, purchased the shop in 1999. The store was founded by Restonians Sue Schram and Sue Wensell in 1978. Both of "the Sues" still …

What are the best champagnes and wines for popping on New Year's Eve?
It’s a New Year’s Eve tradition: Toasting out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new with a glass (or two) of champagne or sparkling wine. With so many sparkling wines to choose from, picking the best bottle can be daunting. Prices for sparkling wine range from less than $10 to more than $500 per bottle. Keep in mind that while you usually get what you pay for, there are some great options for those of us on a budget. Large “negociant” champagne houses that purchase much of their fruit, such as Veuve Clicquot, Bollinger, Roederer, Taittinger, Perrier Jouet and Nicolas Feuillatte, dominate the market. In case you’re wondering what the difference is: Champagne comes from the Champagne region of France. Sparkling wine is bubbly from other parts of …

No opening date has been set, but the space is well into the build-out process.
