Save the Date: Rescue Reston Gala Jan. 26

Grassroots group plans fundraiser as Jan. 30 zoning appeal hearing approaches.

Rescue Reston, the local advocacy group aimed at stopping potential redevelopment of Reston National Golf Course, is holding a gala fundraiser on Jan. 26 at Hidden Creek Country Club. Event tickets are $100, which includes hors d’oeuvres, dancing and a silent auction. Click here for ticket information and purchase. Tickets will be available to the public beginning Monday. Rescue Reston, headed by executive director John Pinkman, was formed last summer when it was learned that RN Golf Management, the owners of Reston National, inquired with the county to see if the course could be zoned residential rather than open space. The county said no, and any redevelopment would require a change to the Fairfax County and Reston Master Plans. RN Golf…

Kids Speak Out on Future of Reston National

Fifth graders at Terraset Elementary use persuasive writing exercise to outline reasons for keeping Reston National Golf Course as open space.

The future of Reston National Golf Course has been a hot topic since it was discovered earlier this year that RN Golf Management, the course's owner, filed an inquiry with Fairfax County Zoning to see whether the course is zoned residential. While a redevelopment plan may be in the works, no plan has yet to be made public. But with a Board of Zoning Appeals hearing coming up on Jan. 30, residents have mobilized with an online petition; a grassroots advocacy group (Rescue Reston); a rally; and other efforts to keep the 166-acre public golf course as open space and not residential development. Evan Millar, a fifth-grade teacher at Terraset Elementary School, posed the problem to his students - many of whom live on or near Reston National - …

We thank Terraset and the students for reminding us that community is more than Business people, stores and adults. What we have tried to build for 50 years in Reston is renewed every time you realize the opinions and the activism ofl our children. What their teachers and parents realize however the Impact of 1000 homes and 2500 people moving into the Terraset School district. According to …   more ›

Can You Help Rescue Reston Spread The Word?

Grassroots group needs help rotating new banners to strategic spots near Reston National Golf Course.

Rescue Reston, the grassroots group aimed at stopping development at Reston National Golf Course, has two new banners it hopes will get the attention of local residents.  The banners that say "It's Colts Neck Road not Bottle Neck Road,” and ‘It's Sunrise Valley Drive not Hi-rise Valley drive," have been placed in several spots on roads nearby the golf course in South Reston. The group wants to move them around every few days in order to garner to biggest audience. "It is important because the banners do not become a part of everyday scenery, said Rescue Reston executive director John Pinkman. "But we will need help to move the signs in the coming weeks." Rescue Reston was formed over the summer after it was learned at RN Golf Management …

We're still wanting volunteers to canvass their own streets. Send email to info (@) rescuereston.com with your street name and number of units and we'll be in touch with materials. The golf course does not need someone to "buy" them and the permeable land is a very good neighbor for our lakes. Learn more at http://youtu.be/6mxV7w71J4c   more ›

Rescue Reston Petition Now Online

Grassroots group seeking signatures to support open space in preparation for Reston National Golf Course's Board of Zoning Appeals Hearing.

Rescue Reston now has an online petition for residents to sign if they support keeping Reston National Golf Course as open space. To access the petition, click here. Rescue Reston is the advocacy group formed in July after it was discovered that RN Golf Management, the ownership group of the golf course, was seeking an appeal to an April inquiry with Fairfax County Zoning as to whether the course was designated residential. When the response was "no," the ownership group hired Frank McDermott, a top land use attorney, and filed an appeal. The appeal was scheduled to be heard Oct. 24, but has been postponed until Jan. 30 at the request of RN Golf Management. The looming appeal has galvanized local groups, which are adamant the 166-acre golf…

On The Docket: Development Projects in Reston

A look at some of the planned projects up for discussion soon.

Here is a look at the status of some of Reston's larger development projects. Terraset Elementary School - Fairfax County Public Schools Design and Construction Services has filed a Planned Residential Community Plan for Terraset Elementary School Renovations. The plans include proposed building additions totaling 33,184 square feet to include an administration addition, art/music addition, two classroom additions and a multi-purpose addition. The upper parking area will be redesigned to improve traffic flow and to provide a kiss-and-ride drop-off area. The two existing pedestrian bridges will be demolished, and a new centrally located bridge will be constructed to connect the school with the kiss-and-ride area. The application has been …

Chipperson - you are just another one of those angry, red-faced tea baggers who blames everything on the "gawd damd librels." If everybody thought the same way as you, then Central Park in NYC and the Mall in DC would be nothing but Wal-Marts, McDonalds and multi-story parking garages. I hope they build some of that in YOUR backyard, then we can enjoy your salty tears and seeing the veins in your…   more ›

RA Details Reston National's Enviro Impact

Golf course redevelopment could affect wildlife, trees, water and RA facilities.

Redeveloping Reston National Golf Course as residential housing could have a severe impact on the surrounding environment - including diminishing wildlife homes and disappearing trees and plants, RA's CEO and Parks and Recreation Director say. CEO Milton Matthews and Parks Director Larry Butler outlined some hypothetical findings to the RA board last week. Matthews and Butler said since there are no official plans at this point, it difficult to make accurate assumptions. Reston National's owners have filed an appeal with the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals. They maintain the parcel, which has been a golf course for nearly 40 years, is zoned residential. The county does not agree. The appeal, scheduled for Oct. 24, has been deferred …

Maryanne - the present issue if the golf course and residential development, not revilatization. Similarly, the zoning for International Center is business and could not be redeveloped residential without wrangling similar to the one going on about the golf course. But good point about the International Center, and a good idea for us to examine what should go there in a future story.   more ›

Golf Course Appeal to Be Heard Jan. 30

Reston National Golf Course owners get new date for officials to hear zoning appeal

RN Golf Management has a new date with the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals: Jan. 30. The ownership group of Reston National Golf Course was supposed to go before the BZA on Oct. 24, but this week requested a deferral of the hearing so it could have more time to prepare. The issue dates back to last April, when RN Golf Management, which is owned by a subsidiary of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, asked county zoning officials if the golf course was zoned residential. When the zoning officials said the golf course was not residential and to designate it residential would involve a change to the county master plan, the owners filed the zoning appeal. The looming appeal has galvanized local groups, which are adamant the 166-acre golf…

Everyone that I talk to in Reston is completely against all of this massive development going on, so how do the same officials promoting such keep getting re-elected? I grew up here, and I'm truly disturbed by the transformation that is taking place at the hands of county and state representatives (Which means that it is out of our hands, aside from being able to change who we elect to represent …   more ›

Reston National Owners Postpone Zoning Appeal

Appeal on status of Reston National moved from Oct. 24 to January.

The fight for the future of Reston National Golf Course will continue into 2013 as the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals hearing scheduled for Oct. 24 has been deferred until January. The hearing was deferred at the request of the golf course owner, RN Golf Management. The looming appeal has galvanized local groups, which are adamant the 166-acre golf course should remain open space. Reston Association and Reston Citizens Association have vowed to fight redevelopment, and a grassroots organization, Rescue Reston, has mobilized since July. "We will not be moved," said Rescue Reston executive director John Pinkman. "We live here, we are not going anywhere. If anything, this delay helps us get better organized and communicate our message…

Video: Kids Against Golf Course Development

"Kids of the 13th Fairway" show their support for keeping Reston National as a golf course.

A group of Reston children calling themselves "The Kids of the 13th Fairway" have produced and edited a video that adds their support for the effort to keep Reston National Golf Course from being redeveloped as residential housing. Rescue Reston and other supporters are banding together in preparation for an Oct. 24 hearing before the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals. RN Golf Management, the company that owns the golf course, inquired with the county last spring as to whether the 40-year-old golf course could be classified as residential. Fairfax County Zoning's answer was no, and the owners would have to get a change to the county master plan in order to redevelop as residential. To see all Reston Patch articles on this ongoing …
