Reston National BZA Hearing Postponed Again

Board of Zoning Appeals hearing now set for September.

Reston National Golf Course's appeal with the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals has been delayed once again - this time until September. RN Golf Management, the course owners, asked for the delay of the May 22 hearing. The new hearing date is now Sept. 25. This is the fourth extension. The hearing was originally supposed to take place in September 2012, then October, January and finally May. The saga of the 166-acre public course's future has been going on for nearly a year. Last April, the RB Golf Management, a subsidiary of Northwestern Mutual Insurance, asked Fairfax County Zoning if the course can be considered residential rather than open space. Zoning said no, and that is when the golf course owners filed an appeal, sparking …

What About Reston National Public Park?

Could this example from suburban Cleveland be an alternative to condos being built at Reston National Golf Course?

In mid-March, residents of Lyndhurst, OH and nearby communities were excited to check out the Acacia Reservation, a 155-acre park that is now part of Cleveland Metroparks. The opening of the paved trails and rolling, open space ended a controversy that ensued for much of 2012. And it sounds very similar to the saga of Reston National Golf Course, which in undergoing its own uncertain future in a changing community. The shareholders of Acacia Country Club, at the site since 1925, no longer wanted to be in the country club business. They had an offer in 2012 to sell the property - which is close to a lifestyle center similar to Reston Town Center a major indoor mall - to developers interested in turning it into strip malls with big box-…

Where Will Soapstone Crossing Begin and End?

Engineers show Restonians some of the options for a future crossing point of the Dulles Toll Road.

Reston residents got a look Wednesday night at how a future extension of Soapstone Drive might work as it connects Sunset Hills Road and Sunrise Valley Drive and offers an access option to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro station. "This is an opportunity to find other transportation alternatives," Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins told the crowd at South Lakes High School. "Reston has a great layout," she said. "But we have some barriers. The gulf of the Dulles Toll Road makes it difficult as there is no place other than Wiehle and Reston Parkway." Hudgins also said there is not yet funding in place to build the Soapstone extension, which consultants say could cost $100-150 million. One of the biggest costs: land acquisition and impact, …

Walk The Golf Course and Get to Know Nature

Two programs - including one at Reston National Golf Course - look at Reston's community of wildlife, people and places.

Reston National Golf Course is not just for golfers - it is also home to a variety of wildlife, plants and trees. The Reston Historic Trust invites you to join them on a nature walk at 1 p.m. Saturday to get to know some of the flora and fauna of Reston National Golf Course. The golf course has been in the news recently because of a potential plan for redevelopment that would likely interfere with some of the course's wildlife. Read more about the story on our Reston National Golf Course Redevelopment topic page. RN Golf Management, the course owners, will go before the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals on May 22. They are appealing a 2012 county zoining decision that said the course is not classified as residential.  Saturday's walk …

Hudgins: 'Not Involved' In Any RNGC Talks

Hunter Mill Supervisor says she supports county zoning's stance that Reston National should remain open space.

Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins says she has not had discussions with the owners of Reston National Golf Course about redevelopment there. Hudgins statement comes in response to a Reston 2020 report earlier this week that said there may be a deal in the works to bring some residential development to the 166-acre site, along with a big park. On Thursday, Reston Association also said it has not been involved in any talks. The issue of redeveloping Reston National Golf Course has been discussed since it came to light last summer that the golf course owner, RN Golf Management, inquired with Fairfax County Zoning as to the space's residential status. When the county said turing the open space into residential would involve a change to the …

RA President: Golf Course Meetings Are Rumors

Ken Knueven sends letter to Reston Association members assuring them that RA not participating in rumored secret redevelopment deal.

Reston Association President Ken Knueven sent a letter to RA members on Thursday, assuring them that RA has not been informed of any current or ongoing meetings regarding the redevelopment of Reston National Golf Course. Knueven the only meeting he is aware of is the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals hearing on May 22. He said he hopes any other reports of meetings or discussions are nothing more than “rumors.” Kuneven is referring to a report by citizens group Reston2020, which reported on its blog earlier this week that a secret deal is in the works that will bring some housing to the site but also set aside a substantial portion of the golf course for a large Reston central park. "Recently, there have been rumors that meetings or …

While I would like that to be true, the board of supervisors (who would defer to our supervisor) and/or the courts, depending on how this plays out, could end up making the determination. We don't have the power to decide - but we can take action by trying to influence the outcome by writing to Hudgins, by writing to the BZA, by signing the petition, by donating to the legal fund, etc. This could…   more ›

A New Deal For Reston National Golf Course?

Reston2020 reports that Fairfax County and golf course owners may be working on plan for housing and a big central park.

Are Fairfax County and RN Golf Management close to making a deal to bring residential housing - along with a big park - to Reston National Golf Course? Reston Citizens Association group Reston2020 says they may be. Reston2020 reports on its blog that a secret deal is in the works that will set aside a substantial portion of the golf course for a large Reston central park.   Reston2020 sources say an option is being explored to have the developer proffer land for a park in return for being granted rental unit density.   "Another source indicates that [Northwestern Mutual, RN Golf Management's parent company] is testing the market among several major area developers to see if the golf course can be sold for commercial development purposes.  …

In summer, my yard hosts more butterflies than Meadowlark Gardens. It may be that my visits to the former were when the winged creatures were not in evidence, but we did have countless numbers of them last summer. It was so gratifying to know that we had provided them with a suitable habitat. Will miss that when the dozers start. Hope they will notify us when the tree fellings begin, also. Hate …   more ›

Rescue Reston Fundraiser Moved to May 5

Winter gala postponed in anticipation of new May Board of Zoning Appeals hearing.

Rescue Reston has changed the date of its fundraiser from Jan. 26 to May 5. The advocacy group, formed last summer in response to the owners of Reston National Golf Course's inquiry about whether the course could is zoned residential, was slated to have a winter gala this weekend in anticipation of a Jan. 30 Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals hearing. However, the golf course owners recently asked the hearing be rescheduled to May 22, so the fundraiser will now more closely coincide with the new date. The event has also been changed from a black tie-optional party to more casual Spring Into Action Bar-B-Que at 5 p.m. on May 5 at Hidden Creek Country Club. Rescue Reston executive director John Pinkman says people who bought advance …

Golf Course Zoning Appeal Moved to May 22

Hearing was scheduled for Jan. 30, but owners of Reston National Golf Course will have to wait until spring before getting answer.

Update, Jan. 7 - The hearing was postponed at the request of the applicant, RN Golf Management. Original Story: The Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals hearings for the owners of Reston National Golf Course has been moved from Jan. 30 to May 22. This is the second time the hearing has been postponed. It originally was scheduled for Oct. 30. The Board of Zoning Appeals did not say which side asked for this most recent postponement. The issue dates back to last April, when RN Golf Management, which is owned by a subsidiary of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, asked county zoning officials if the Reston golf course was zoned residential. When the zoning officials said the golf course was not residential and to designate it residential …

Laura, you are a voice of reason. I asked a simple question and one person assumed she knew what I wished for. Another told me to take some lessons. As I read the cynicism and vitriol expressed here, I am turned off. Larry Butler's memo was instructive insofar as it was able to look at some of the implications of this redevelopment. In the last paragraph, though, he mentioned something that does …   more ›
