"Achieving the Vision for Reston" outlines standards for community development.
The Reston Master Plan Special Study Task Force has completed its vision statement for Reston in the 21st Century. The Task Force envisions Reston as "complete community with a broad range of choices in housing, jobs, and lifestyles. Recommendations build on Reston's founding principles." Additionally, the vision statement says that if developers want to develop high density and chance zoning standards, they will have to offer proffers to enhance the community. To see the entire document, click here. The vision for Reston will play a role as transit-oriented development near Reston's Metro stations increases in the next several years. Attend a public meeting Wednesday to hear county transportation officials' plans for an extension to relieve clogged Reston roads.
Is a Soapstone Drive extension the solution to crowded nearby roads after Metro arrives later this year? Fairfax County transportation officials will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at South Lakes High School to discuss the feasibility of extending Soapstone Drive over the Dulles Toll Road to provide Reston residents better access to the Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station. The county has been looking into extending Soapstone for several years. Last month, it presented a report to the Reston Master Plan Special Study Task Force with its latest proposal to alleviate traffic on Wiehle Avenue. Read that proposal here or click the PDF attached to this post. For all of Reston Patch's Silver Line news, check out our Silver Line Topic Page…

A 100' wide right of way is not required for a 48' wide roadway. One lane moves only 1200 cars during peak hour. This fly-over is going to cost tens of millions of dollars. It needs to have 2 lanes each way for motor vehicles.   more ›
Hudgins says she hopes to move forward in redevelopment process this spring.
Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins says she hopes to have narrowed down the list of proposals for Lake Anne-area revitalization within the next 60 days. Hudgins told the Reston Association Board of Directors at a planning session this week that there is not an ultimate solution for redevelopment yet. "Hopefully, in the next 60 days, we will be able to move forward," Hudgins said. "The good news is we have some good opportunities." It has been over a year since Fairfax County released a Request for Proposal (RFP) for Crescent Apartments near Lake Anne. Crescent is owned by Fairfax County and was acquired in 2006 as part of the goal of adding additional affordable housing units in the area. The 16-acre, 180-unit development was built in …

Are you saying that you would support a program that provided housing to low income people (say everyone earning below the median family income) at subsidized rents? Would support housing subsidies for county employees (teachers, police men, firemen) who cannot afford housing within the county?   more ›
The Silver Line's first phase is on schedule to take riders to Wiehle Avenue by December 2013 and a construction contract for Phase 2 should be awarded in May.
The first phase of the Silver Line is 89 percent complete and is on schedule to be taking Metro passengers to Reston Reston in December 2013, officials confirmed this week. Mark Canale, Dulles Rail Project Manager for the Fairfax County Department of Transportation, said construction on the first phase is on track. During a Tuesday meeting of Fairfax County’s commission for the Phase 1 Transportation Improvement District, Canale said 98 percent of tracks for the extension from East Falls Church to Wiehle Avenue have been laid down. Some track work remains, as well as construction on garages and stations, but Canale said service in December was looking very likely. The West Falls Church rail yard is expected to be complete around the same …

Hunter Mill Supervisor says more money spent on bus improvements will take pressure off Reston roads when Silver Line opens.
Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins is asking fellow supervisors to consider allocating an additional $2.2 million for Fairfax Connector bus service that will help alleviate traffic after the Silver Line opens at Wiehle Avenue in December. Phase 1 of Metro's Silver Line is slated to begin service from Tysons Corner to Reston's Wiehle Avenue at the end of the year. Wiehle will be the end of the line for several years as Phase 2 - from Wiehle Avenue to Ashburn -will not be completed for at least five more years. Add to that a 2,300-space parking garage at Wiehle - the only Phase 1 station with significant parking - and transportation-watchers are predicting problems. Hudgins is among them. "Fairfax County Connector has just concluded a …

More bus service throughout the day is absolutely necessary. I would certainly use it regularly. As it is now, with such limited service, we have to drive cars to go any distance. There's no other alternative. Give us an alternative, and we will use it.   more ›

Store at Spectrum's last day is Thursday.
Reston's Barnes & Noble will shut its doors for good Thursday. Most of the merchandise that has been on markdown since December is gone from the store and many shelves have been dismantled. There is some merchandise still available - such as CDs in the music department and bestseller-list books - as those will likely be shipped to a nearby location's inventory at the last minute. In any case, time is running out if you have been meaning to visit. The Spectrum Starbucks will remain open. The Container Store is set to open in the bookstore space this fall. Developers plan mixed-use development with urban look that fits into natural setting.
Reston Association's Design Review Board unanimously approved in concept the plans for more mixed-use development at Reston Heights. Plans to add retail, residential, office and parking to the parcel near the Reston International Center have been in the works for years. The first part of the plan - which included the Westin Reston Heights, the Mercer Condominium and office buildings - was completed in the last several years. The next phase will include 145,000 square feet of above-grade retail, 100,00 square feet of below-grade retail, 428,225 square feet of office and 498 residential units. The new phase will potentially have a new grocery and neighborhood retail space and will be a pedestrian friendly, urban-type streetscape with mid-…

In annual address, Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova warns sequestration could impact revenues, is making business owners delay decisions.
Revitalization and development will drive Fairfax County's economy in 2013 and beyond, Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova said in her annual state of the county address Wednesday. Talking to members of the media Wednesday morning, Bulova said massive development projects in Tysons, Merrifield and Springfield will create "bright days and years ahead" — but the threat of sequestration was also making business owners hesitant to commit to a relocation or expansion in the county. “Fairfax County’s future is in development,” Bulova said in her statement. “Aging commercial centers near mass transit, like Tysons, present especially valuable opportunities for attractive, transit-oriented mixed-use revitalization.” The county is hoping …

Land development based economics - if we build it, they will come. I read yesterday that the Democratic party is saturated with development special interests. It's quite clear that this idiotic and imbecilic economic policy has made its way to the local level and is dominating it. The county government is saturated with developers. All the "economic forecasts" provided to the BOS is provided by "…   more ›
