How to Give Input on Baron Cameron Plans

Fairfax County Park Authority wants citizen ideas and feedback on future of Baron Cameron Park. Here is how to offer it.

Want to know more about future plans for Baron Cameron Park? The Fairfax County Park Authority now has a project website devoted to all things Baron Cameron. The county kicked off the master planning process with a May 7 meeting.  At the meeting, county staff presentations provided an overview of the Park Authority master plan revision process, background information about Baron Cameron Park (including the existing approved master plan and current site conditions), and the role and purpose of the park as a District park.  The staff presentation from the meeting is attached to this article. More information, including a meeting summary  and citizen comments, is now available for review on the project website. The FPCA is considering several…

Reston 2020, had this suggestion in the final draft of a white paper on the new facility. Other main topics of the paper - does Reston need a new indoor pool? How should it be financed? What should the center include? READ THE ENTIRE DRAFT HERE RCC is looking into the feasibility of building a new facility, which will likely feature a 50-meter indoor pool, on about five acres at the 68-acre Baron Cameron Park. The RCA Board of Directors approved the draft white paper last evening at its regular monthly meeting--with the addition of one footnote. The paper focuses on the many important unanswered questions--including some mentioned in previous comments here--that need to be answered before we decide whether, where, what, when, and how to proceed. It also provides some analysis of the market and …   more ›

What Would New Reston Recreation Center Cost?

Reston 2020 looks at costs to build and operate a new indoor pool and recreation center at Baron Cameron Park.

Reston Community Center is looking into building a new facility at Baron Cameron Park. While the cost breakdown will not be known until consultants Brailsford & Dunlavey release a report on June 3, advocacy group Reston 2020 has done some number crunching of its own. Terry Maynard of avocacy group Reston 2020 says the group anticipates that a new recreation center/indoor pool and associated surface parking would cost between $15-$25 million. Those numbers are based on preliminary info that B&D presented to RCC's Board of Governors and the community on May 6. RCC wants to build the facility on land owned by Fairfax County Park Authority. Local swimmers are in favor of a new facility, saying the current one at RCC Hunters Woods is outdated …

Actually, I acknowledge that there is excess demand for public indoor pools. How much of this excess demand can be satisfied by the many private indoor pools in the area I'm not sure. We also seem to agree that there is excess demand for outdoor fields and open recreational areas, and that shortage will also continue to grow (and will not be satisfied privately). My point is that the plan to …   more ›

What's In the Future For Baron Cameron Park?

Fairfax County Park Authority begins Master Plan process for 68-acre park, which may or may not have an indoor rec center in its future.

Reston is changing. How, if at all, should Baron Cameron Park change along with it? That was the question posed to the community Tuesday night at a Fairfax County Park Authority meeting on the master planning of the park. Baron Cameron Park has been a subject of discussion recently as Reston Community Center is looking into the feasibility and the need for an indoor recreation center (featuring a new year-round pool) to possibly be built at the park. Emotions ran high on Monday as RCCfrom consultants - and residents who are mostly opposed to the facility for a variety of reasons. Consulting firm Brailsford & Dunlavey said it will have its complete report, including operating costs and revenue outlook, on June 3. FCPA Chair Bill Bouie said …

Reston Association: No Opinion on RCC Pool

RA says it will wait for more information before forming a position on plans for new indoor pool at Baron Cameron Park.

Reston Association's Board of Directors says it is not yet taking a position on the Reston Community Center's proposal for a new recreational facility at Baron Cameron Park. "Before finalizing a position on the recreation facility, the RA board and staff will continue to attend meetings and gather more information about the proposal," RA president Ken Knueven said in a statement. "We welcome and strongly encourage our members to share their perspectives through the communication channels provided by RCC on the Park Authority’s Master Planning Process of Baron Cameron Park." RA and RCC worked together on a proposal to build a recreation center at RA's Brown's Chapel Park in 2009. Public opinion was mostly against the 171,000-square-foot …

Report Shows Demand - But Not Cost - For Pool

Reston Community Center consultants narrow down possibilities for new indoor pool at Baron Cameron Park, but don't offer financial information yet.

A preliminary report from consultants Brailsford & Dunlavey shows that there is more demand for aquatics programs than Reston Community Center can meet with its current indoor pool. RCC is looking into the feasibility of building a new indoor pool at Baron Cameron Park. Consultants from Brailsford & Dunlavey are updating a 2009 report they did for RCC and Reston Association about a similar facility at Brown's Chapel Park - which died before it went to a public referendum. The final report will be completed in early June, said B & D's Craig Levin. At a meeting at RCC Hunters Woods on Monday, he showed some preliminary stats. Among them: * 3,600 have been enrolled in swim classed in the last year and 7,120 have registered for drop-in water …

And newcomers to Reston should take into consideration those of us who have been here over 20 years, who respected Bob Simon's plan and dream and who have repeatedly lost green space for new development. To build a monstrosity in this location for a few is not needed. Use the new Lifetime Facility off Sunset Hills. That will be completed Fall 2013. Too far to drive???   more ›

Great comments this evening at RCC meeting that is except for the person who said that Baron Cameron was not really a park just grass fields. I guess with that logic we should also do away with Lake Fairfax Park which also has many grass fields.   more ›

Swimming, Diving - and Traffic and Concrete?

Neighbors not pleased about idea of a new Reston Community Center indoor pool at Baron Cameron Park.

While triathletes and year-round swim clubs envision a sparkling new indoor aquatics facility at Baron Cameron Park, some residents of nearby neighborhoods see something different: increased traffic, loss of green space and construction chaos. "As a resident of Longwood Grove I am most acutely concerned about the traffic impact," says Jennifer Dell'Orto. Longwood Grove is located off of Wiehle, across from Baron Cameron Park. "As a parent with three children who will attend Buzz Aldrin [Elementary] during the construction phase of the project, I am very concerned about having a large and lengthy construction project taking place adjacent to the elementary school.  Currently, the school and the park share a fence line.  I worry about the …

It seems to me a good example of hyperbole, false data, and lack of maturity would be the chairman of FCPA and RCC telling residents that if they reject this proposal that he will allow the land to be developed by a commercial developer. Then you make a similar comment in a previous post. The message from RCC clearly is 'we want your input as long as you are not against the proosal.''   more ›

RCC Supporter: 'We Are Shortchanging Kids'

Citizens continue to offer feedback about proposed new indoor pool.

A vision is beginning to emerge for the proposed new Reston Community Center facility at Baron Cameron Park. RCC and the Fairfax County Park Authority, along with consultants Brailsford & Dunlavey, have been conducting public feedback sessions since February to get an idea of what the community wants, and now, keeping that in mind, what it might cost.  While feedback has been mixed overall, at Monday's meeting, every one of the more than half dozen speakers was in favor of the new rec center. "It has occurred to us we are really shortchanging the kids," said Gordon Gerson, president of Reston Masters Swimming. "The outdoor world of Reston only available to them six months a year - no baseball, no swimming. Where do they go? What do they do…

The fact that someone is a volunteer has nothing to do with the principle of "conflict of interest". Board members of not for profit organizations have a fiduciary responsibility to those organizations. It is impossible to impartially represent two parties on opposite sides of the agreement. Mr. Bouie has to recuse himself from this matter. If he stays involved it will be a strong basis for a …   more ›
