Weird News: Cicadas (Or Not), Naked Strolls, Crows in Closets and Kitty Litter in The Pool

Plus, we tell you where NOT to find your next lawnmower.

Editor's Note: Patch has 31 sites in Virginia and D.C., and not a day goes by that something weird isn't happening somewhere in the area. Here's a look back at some weird goings on over the past week. Cicadas Everywhere (Or Not): A line has been drawn, and it isn't residents rejecting the D.C. metro label — it's cicadas that have decided they'd rather avoid the congestion inside the Beltway. We've been anxiously anticipating a crazy spring of buzzing cicadas crawling everywhere. Now, some of us are finding the big bugs crawling out of holes and up trees in Fredericksburg, Woodbridge and lower Fairfax County, but others haven't seen any of this year's brood.  Enjoying the Breeze: Manassas City Police have a description of a suspect in …

North Shore Pool & Spa is open 3-9 p.m. weekdays this week (then 3-7 p.m. beginning Sept. 9) and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends. Both pools are heated.

Season Ends Sunday for Many RA Pools

The good news is plenty will still be open for late-summer fun.

Sunday is the last day for several Reston Association pools this season. Golf Course Island, Hunters Woods, Lake Audubon, Newbridge and Uplands will be closed for the remainder of the season as many on the lifeguard staff return to college. These pools will remain open through Labor Day: Glade, Lake Newport, Lake Thoreau, North Hills, North Shore, Ridge Heights and Tall Oaks (weekends only). To see exact hours, closed days and adult swim times, click here). Dogwood Pool remains closed for renovation. Did you get a chance to swim in different pools this summer? Which is your favorite? Tell us in the comments.

No absolute favorite. Top 3 would be Glade for the giant slide and good diving board, Hunters Woods for all the activities (diving, basketball, volley, ball and fountain during breaks), and Uplands for the littlest…   more ›

Last Weekend for Many Reston Association Pools

Busy season winds down Aug. 22.

Reston Association also sees a drop in attendance at the neighborhood pools. They  lose a significant portion of their 200-strong life guard staff, as college age guards return to school. "This has been a long, hot summer, with very few 'rain out' days," said Laura Kowalski, RA Acquatics Manager. "Our pools have been extremely busy all season." This is the last weekend for Autumnwood Pool, Dogwood Pool, Golf Course Island Pool, Hunters Woods Pool, Lake Audubon Pool, Newbridge Pool, Shadowood Pool and Uplands Pool. Those pools close Sunday. From Aug. 23  to Sept. 6, …
