SLHS Girls Earn Spot in State Tournament

Basketball team tops defending champs Oakton for first spot in states since 1986.

South Lakes girls basketball team held off defending Virginia Class AAA state champion Oakton Thursday night for a 48-46 victory, earning a spot in the Northern Region final and a place in the 2013 state tournament. The game was tied at 32 going into the fourth quarter, but the Seahawks scored the next nine points.The Cougars pulled within one point with five second left in the game, but junior Collette Toma hit free throws with seconds remaining to seal the victory. South Lakes makes its first trip to the regional final and state tourney since 1986, when Seahawks coach Christy Winters Scott was the teams star player. Basketball: SLHS Girls In Regional Semis

Buzzer-beater lifts Seahawks past Mt. Vernon.

A shot by South Lakes junior Caitlin Jensen at the buzzer lifted the Seahawks past Mount Vernon in girls Northern Region basketball play Tuesday night and boosted South Lakes into the Regional semifinals for the first time since 1997. With seven seconds remaining, senior Gabrielle Schultz grabbed a steal. Sasha Sprei split the defense to find Jensen, who knocked down the final shot and gave South Lakes (22-4) a 46-45 victory. "I am extremely proud of our team, and the resilience and focus down the stretch," said SLHS coach Christy Winters Scott.
