What Implications Does Boston Have for Marine Corps Marathon Security?

Explosions near the finish line of the Boston Marathon Monday could affect security measures at DC-area races.

The explosions that killed two and injured more than 100 people at the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon could have security implications for DC's Marine Corps Marathon in October. The Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) begins on the grounds of the Pentagon and the course moves through Arlington, Va. and Washington. In 2010, the 35th annual Marine Corps Marathonhad heightened security in light of a shooting at Marine Corps-related facilities earlier that year. At the time, Col. Daniel J. Choike said Marines were working with local law enforcement agencies and the FBI to ensure that "additional measures" were taken in what was already a "robust security plan." Yonathan Melaku was later charged with a shooting at the Pentagon, a Marine Corps …

The Nike Women's Half-Marathon is in DC in just two weeks (April 28). They don't have the marines to provide security measures. I am much more concerned about that race (especially since I am running in it.)   more ›

Finishing the Marine Corps Marathon

Local runner results, and an overview of the 36th Marine Corps Marathon.

Angeline Hannachi, Laura DeFraia-Colee and Victor Tran began running for different reasons.  Sunday they ran with the same purpose: Complete their first Marine Corps Marathon (MCM).  They had begun their training with Potomac River Running in Burke and Reston. Victor Tran, who lives in Annandale, had set his goal to finish in 04:15.  He was not far off, completing in 04:31:56.  Reston's Laura DeFraia-Colee planned to keep it simple -- "run each mile at a nice steady pace, keep a positive attitude through all 26.2 miles, and hopefully finish!"  Finish, she did; in 06:39:29. Angeline Hannachi of Fairfax decided one year ago to train for the MCM.  Today she finished the race in 04:41:05. The finishing chip times were obtained from the Marine …

After 20 Years, Nowhere Near The Finish Line

Commonwealth Chiropractic Center is celebrating two decades of treating and training some of Reston's - and the world's - top runners.

In 1991, Ron Kulik and Neil McLaughlin were new grads from New York Chiropractic College who set out - without much of a plan - to open an office in Reston. Two decades and thousands of patients later, the two are celebrating their 20th year in business at Commonwealth Chiropractic Center and preparing several runners for Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon. Along with adjusting spines and caring for necks, Kulik and McLaughlin, both former college athletes, have become known in area running circles as people to see for training and treatment at their accompanying business, Personal Best Running. Kulik, who ran at Virginia Tech, was among the top finishers in the Marine Corps Marathon in 1991 and was also named DC Roadrunner Club runner of the …

Running the Marine Corps Marathon

They began running for different reasons, but Sunday they ran with the same goal -- finish their first Marine Corps Marathon.

The 36th Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) on Sunday is limited to 30,000 participants. Yet registration sold out in record time -- 28 hours, four minutes. Three first-time MCM runners who trained with Potomac River Running (Burke and Reston) gave an overview of their preparation. Angeline Hannachi of Fairfax (first marathon) I began running last year in order to further my weight loss goals. Prior to July 2010, I had never run more than a couple miles at a time, and I have always struggled with my weight. Between being a single mother, working full time and going to school part time, my weight had ballooned to 240 by the end of 2009. On Jan. 1, 2010, I determined that I would lose the weight once and for all. Since then I've shed about 80 …

It's great to see the MCM still going strong after 36 years. I ran the first one in 1976 and we had just 1200 runners. It truely is the "People's Marathon", no prize money for professional runners. The Marines do an awesome job taking care of all the runners.   more ›
