Jumping into Lake Anne for a good cause Saturday.
About 200 brave people jumped into Lake Anne Saturday to raise money for Camp Sunshine at the sixth annual Freezin for a Reason Virginia Polar Dip.

About 200 people jumped into the chilly waters of Lake Anne on Saturday for a good cause - Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The sixth annual Freezin for a Reason Virginia Polar Dip had a goal of raising $100,000, which will send 50 Mid-Atlantic familes to Camp Sunshine in Maine this summer. The freezing part delivered - it was about 29 degrees at jump time 2 p.m. Saturday. It did not stop the superheroes and vikings, clowns and angels and other costumed folks from a dip in the lake. There is still time to jump in Lake Anne for a good cause — or make a donation to someone else who will brave the chilly waters to help kids with life-threatening illnesses attend summer camp. The sixth annual Freezin’ for a Reason Virginia Polar Dip returns to Reston on Saturday. The event raises money for Camp Sunshine, a residential camp in Maine for kids (and their families) undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses. Last year's event raised more than $76,000 for the cause. The 2013 goal is to raise over $100,000, which will allow 50 mid-Atlantic-area families to attend the camp. New nail salon replaces Nail Palace at Lake Anne Plaza
Lake Anne Plaza welcomed a new locally-owned business last week - Forever Shine Nail Salon. Forever Shine took over the space at 1613 Washington Plaza, replacing Nail Palace. Nail Palace closed Dec. 31 after it chose not to renew its lease. Forever Shine has remodeled the space and is open for manicures, pedicures and other nail salon services. Walk-ins are welcome.

Full slate of events to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
There is a full lineup of events in Reston on Sunday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and ask the community "Are we keeping the promise." Where noted, some of the events at Reston Community Center require advance registration. NOTE: The Keynote address and luncheon are sold out. RCC will team with several community organizations, including Southgate Community Center, Reston Association, Reston Interfaith and The Closet for volunteer service projects. Projects will be held indoors and outdoors (weather-permitting) throughout Reston and are open to adults and children. Volunteers will be treated to lunch. It's that time of year again. Time to don a crazy costume - or just be kind of brave — and jump in Lake Anne for a good cause. The sixth annual Freezin’ for a Reason Virginia Polar Dip returns to Reston on on Saturday, Feb. 2. The event raises money for Camp Sunshine, a residential camp in Maine for kids (and their families) undergoing treatment for life-threatening illnesses. Vandals have hit several locations in the Lake Anne area with graffiti this week. Property has been defaced at Lake Anne Park, on signs at Crescent Apartments, and at several locations at Lake Anne Plaza, including on the new signs. Fairfax County Police are investigating the incident.

New nail salon will open soon.
Nail Palace, a salon at Lake Anne Plaza, shut its doors at the end of December. Founders, neighbors and customers dropped by Reston's Used Book Shop to celebrate 35 years.
Dozens of well-wishers stopped by Reston's Used Book Shop on Sunday to congratulate the business on Lake Anne Plaza on its 35th anniversary. The locally owned store was founded in January of 1978. In wake of school shooting in Connecticut, Reston residents hold candlelight vigil to put an end to gun violence.
Restonians gathered at Reston's Lake Anne Plaza at 5 p.m. Saturday for a candlelight vigil to end gun violence. The event was one of several in the area organized in the wake of Friday's school massacre in Newtown, CT. The vigil was organized by advocacy group Move On .
