Forest Edge Kids Raise $500 for Sandy Aid

PTA organizes coin drive to raise money for American Red Cross.

Students at Forest Edge Elementary School gathered their spare change to help victims of Hurricane Sandy - and were able to raise $500. The Forest Edge PTA in November sponsored a two-week Coins from Kids program, in which PTA parents stood in the hallway of the school with a plastic bucket seeking donations of coins from the children to be sent to the American Red Cross to help victims of the devastating storm that hit hardest in New York and New Jersey in October. The PTA advertised the event on its Monday Mail e-newsletter, sent home flyers to all homes in the Tuesday folders, and made announcements on the school's morning announcements, PTA president David Safford said. "We simply asked for any spare change children might have had …

Over the weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles and Baltimore. Reston Patch chipped in with a carload of cleaning supplies and peanut butter. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Superstorm Sandy Relief: How You Can Help

Here is how Northern Virginia residents' donations can aid victims in most affected areas.

Northern Virginia was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers, for when the hotline isn’t staffed, include 609-775-5236 and 908-303-0471 or emails can be sent to Rowena.Madden@sos.state.nj.us. The New York City agency NYC Service is coordinating volunteers for various relief projects in New York City. Go to its Facebook page  or email nycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov with your name and email address. The American Red …

I have two booklets from watch dog organizations which rate/evaluate non-profit organizations, in terms of their fundraising practices, use of funds, complaint history, etc. One is the “Wise Giving Guide” by the Better Business Bureau, and another is the “Charity Rating Guide” by the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP). As far as the financials of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army go, the…   more ›

Sandy Pours Cold Water on Campaigns

Presidential candidates Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, Senate candidates Tim Kaine, George Allen canceled Virginia campaign events during Hurricane Sandy. Hours extended for absentee voting.

Hurricane Sandy upended the campaign schedules for the presidential race, Virginia's U.S. Senate race and congressional races, and put a temporary halt to some early voting and election officer training in the runup to Election Day next week. "I don't want anything to interrupt full participation in democracy as we head into this presidential election," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, in a news conference with reporters Tuesday.   Eight registrars across the state Tuesday were closed — including Arlington County, Falls Church City, Loudoun County and Manassas Park City — due to the storm and could not offer absentee voting. Fairfax County offered absentee voting at Government Center from 4 - 8 p.m. In Alexandria, at least one voting …

FCPS Schools Will Open as Usual Wednesday

School is in and Halloween is on in Fairfax County.

All Fairfax County public schools and offices will open on time on Wednesday, Oct. 31, the schools system announced Tuesday. Individual schools that may have power outages will be reassessed in the morning, so check your inbox for Keep in Touch messages from your individual schools or check the FCPS website. FCPS is asking parents to be patient as buses may need to work around road closures in some parts of the county and bus routes may be delayed. Meanwhile, Halloween trick or treating is generally on in most neighborhoods in Fairfax County. Since trick or treat is not organized by any one jurisdiction, like a town government it is hard to make a universal decision, said Fairfax County spokeswoman Merni Fitzgerald. For more information, …

Gov. McDonnell: Virginia 'Spared' in Hurricane Sandy Damage

The governor said power should be restored to all Dominion customers by Thursday.

Gov. Bob McDonnell said in his final press briefing for Hurricane Sandy that Virginia was "spared a significant event."  “First responders and private partners, they have really done an amazing job preparing for the storm and applying lessons learned from previous storms and putting in an incredible amount of hours,” McDonnell said.  McDonnell cited concerns about rivers cresting as flood waters go into the major arteries, and he expected an update on that later Tuesday. Virginia was awarded a federal disaster declaration yesterday, said McDonnell, noting he was “delighted” that President Barack Obama and FEMA were on it immediately. "That is only for federal direct assistance to allow them to provide resources directly and as we do our …

Reston Weathers Sandy Relatively Well

Storm moves out Tuesday morning as people began moving back to life.

Tuesday morning dawned cold and still a bit rainy, but Reston emerged from the worst of Superstorm Sandy relatively drama free. Many residents hunkered down to sleep in basements Monday night, but only a scattering of homes lost power during the worst of the storm. Some trees fell, but overall, June's Derecho seemed to have caused much more damage here. By 10 a.m., most restaurants at Reston Town Center were preparing to open. One worker at Market Street Bar & Grill at the Hyatt Regency Reston was setting up chairs on the patio in an optimistic move. It was business as usual at the South Lakes Safeway, and all seats were taken at the nearby Starbucks as people tapped on laptops, getting some work done even as their offices were closed. …

Tuesday Storm Update: Winds, Rain Expected to Diminish

Temperatures could feel as cold as 40 degrees. More than 180,000 without power Tuesday morning.

Update - 2:53 p.m. Tuesday  Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said Tuesday afternoon that the commonwealth was "spared a significant event" with Hurricane Sandy. The brunt of the damage was north of Virginia along the New Jersey coast. Power outages from Sandy will not last nearly as long as they did during this past summer's derecho. “It is our intention to have all our customers restored to service by Thursday night,” said Rodney Blevins, vice president of distribution operations for Dominion. Northern Virginia sustained the most damage, Blevins said. In Northern Virgina, where the bulk of Dominion’s efforts are being focused, 92,000 customers are without power as of 1:33 p.m., Blevins said. Blevins said to continue to report 1-866-DOM-HELP …
