Section of lot temporarily closed for now, but will provide more accessible parking spots when it is completed.
A portion of the parking lot at Hunters Woods Village Center will be off-limits as it undergoes renovation for about the next eight weeks. The center will lose current parking arrangement on the side of the lot closest to Ledo's Pizza, Dairy Queen and Reston Community Center. Under its current configuration, the parking lot is separated from the stores' doors by a pull-up lane. The new layout will feature more ADA-accessible parking directly in front of the stores. Work will be ongoing five days a week until its completion sometime in May, said Reston Community Center staffers. Ken Fredgren of the Reston Accessibility Committee says he has been in communication with the center's owners, Edens & Avant, for over a year about improving …

New Hampshire woman grateful to Good Samaritan who helped her on Reston path last month.
A woman visiting Reston from New Hampshire over Thanksgiving wants to thank a Good Samaritan who drove her to the hospital when she was injured. Robertine Wymans of Merrimack, NH, was in town visiting her daughter, who lives near Hunters Woods Village Center. The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Wymans was walking alone on the path near Hunters Woods when she slipped and fell. "About an hour into the walk I slipped on some leaves on the side of a path, heard a crack and knew immediately that I was in trouble," Wymans wrote in an email. "A few people in the distance ignored my pleas for help. "Not familiar with the area, I knew I could not provide a location to 911. I had to move," she said. "I moved through the leaves to the lower path …

What should go in this empty space?
This week's Visions for Vacancies takes us back to the old Hollywood Video building at Hunters Woods Village Center. The stand alone space has been divided into three storefronts. One is occupied by Dunkin' Donuts, which opened in June. The middle part is being outfitted for a new tenant, rumored to be Unleashed by Petco, a pet store. The third part appears up for grabs. It's a newly renovated corner spot that would get good visability and traffic, with plenty of parking. So what do you think should go here?

Ah, the old bringing in the element argument. Those areas have been in a steady decline long before plans for the Silver Line came about. It's not outsiders fault that the locals don't spend their money at those centers.   more ›

What should go in this spot where At Play Cafe used to be?
This week's Visions for Vacancies takes us to Hunters Woods Village Center, where a storefront next to Ledo's sits empty. The space at 2254 Hunters Woods Plaza used to house At Play Cafe, a children's play space. At Play Cafe closed in May 2011 after the owner could not reach a lease agreement with Edens & Avant, the owners of the shopping center. The space has been vacant ever since, and the child-friendly hand painted walls from At Play Cafe remain. What would you like to see open here?

Sonya, to your point -- a franchise is a local business. A resident in Blacksburg, Virginia who owns the Papa Johns in town said to one of my relatives: "I'm from Blacksburg, and this is my local business." Any franchise that you see in Reston is there because a local wanted to start a business.   more ›

While the pull-through/drop-off lane is convenient if that's what you're doing, it's a hassle for those crossing the street from the lot and definitely for those who need handicapped parking. I'm very happy to hear handicapped parking will be going in right up against the curb, where it's actually needed and is more functional. Please post plans for what the new layout will be! Hoping there will …   more ›
