Show Us How You Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Northern Virginia

Show us your best Cinco de Mayo party pictures.

Cinco de Mayo is Sunday, and many Northern Virginians are stocking up on tacos, tequila, and Coronas. Why do we drink all these margaritas, anyway? Cinco de Mayo is a holiday commemorating the Mexican army's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War in 1862. The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Mexican-American culture, complete with parades and parties. How will you be celebrating Cinco de Mayo this weekend? Share your party ideas and events in the comments below, and be sure to upload your best Cinco de Mayo party photos to our gallery by clicking "Upload Photos and Video" above.

It's Cyber Monday!

Fairfax County County officials want shoppers to be savvy during the biggest online spending day of the year.

Millions of people across the nation lined up outside retailers for Black Friday, and now millions more will log on to their computers for Cyber Monday on Nov. 26. According to BusinessWeek, digital specialists at the National Retail Foundation created Cyber Monday in 2005. The shopping holiday was meant to entice office employees who were still riding the high of Black Friday and were able to shop from their work computers. It has since become the centerpiece of online holiday shopping. In 2005, shoppers spent a total of $484 million nationwide, comScore reports. In 2011, they spent $1.25 billion, making it the biggest online spending day in history. Retailers like Wal-Mart are going one step further, advertising Cyber Monday bargains on …

Do You Plan to Spend More This Season?

Virginia's economy is relatively strong, but retailers only expect a modest increase in spending this year nationwide.

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, gift giving, holiday parties — it's an expensive time of year.  According to the National Retail Federation's national holiday consumer spending survey (conducted by BIGinsight), the average holiday shopper will spend $749.51 on gifts, décor, holiday cards, entertaining and other things this season. That's a minor increase from $740.57 — the amount shoppers spent last year. Two-thirds of respondents to a recent poll by the NPD Group said they “plan to spend about the same” as last year, while 10 percent planned to “spend more.” Will you be more creative with your gifting, or are you planning to rely on more social shopping sites like Groupon and Living Social for cheaper gifts? Or, are you less …

Mutts Matter Rescue

Make A Difference This Holiday Season: Help A Pup In Need

Do you love dogs and want to make a difference? Consider becoming a foster family for a rescue dog during the holidays.

I’ve written a few articles over the past two years about fostering dogs, and multiple readers from the Patch community have stepped up to become foster families. It’s great to see more and more people becoming aware of dog rescue, getting involved, and understanding the importance and vital need of fostering. Fostering is the backbone of rescue, and we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes. It was only a few years ago that I learned about fostering and how it works. Fostering involves opening your heart and home to a pup in need, giving them a safe place to land and some TLC until they’ve found their new home. Some foster pups are easier than others, but all bring great joy and …

Beat the Crowds During Black Friday

A few tips on beating the traffic while holiday shopping during Black Friday weekend.

This year, about 147 million people plan to go shopping during Black Friday weekend, according to a recent National Retail Federation survey. That is down from last year’s 152 million who planned to shop during the same weekend. NRF’s survey shows that 71 million said they would shop and another 76 million said they would wait and see what retailers have ito offer that weekend. “Though the Black Friday tradition is here to stay, there’s no question that it has changed in recent years; already there is a tremendous amount of excitement and anticipation surrounding retailers’ Thanksgiving and Black Friday promotions,” said NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. With that said, shopaholics everywhere are gearing up for a weekend marathon of …
