Elden Street to close for parade route.
This weekend is Herndon High School's annual Homecoming and the festivities include a parade, football game, powder puff game, bonfire and much more. Some roads in town will be closing to through traffic on Saturday to clear the way for the parade to make its way through town. Here's what you need to know: • Elden Street will be closed from Lynn Street to Sterling Road. • Sterling Road will be closed from Elden Street to Herndon Parkway. Those leaving from side streets will be able to exit. • Lynn Street in the downtown area will be closed, and it may be difficult to get anywhere in the core of downtown on Station and Spring streets as well. It's Homecoming week at Herndon High School.
It's that time of year, when people prepare to walk down Elden Street or line up to watch as Homecoming takes over the town. This year's Herndon Homecoming Parade will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday down Elden Street leading to downtown Herndon. The football game will be against Washington and Lee High School at 1 p.m. Saturday at Herndon High School. HHS students will celebrate with a homecoming dance Saturday evening. This year's homecoming theme is Childhood Nostalgia. For Herndon students celebrating Spirit Week, Tuesday will be Cartoon Day, Wednesday is Childhood Idol Day, Thursday is Toy Day and Friday is Class Color Day. Six local students from magnet school earn national honor.
Six students at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology who hail from Reston and Herndon were among the 229 Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students named semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) for 2013. Semifinalists are eligible to compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarship awards worth $32 million, to be awarded in spring 2013. Resurrection Baptist Church in Herndon, led by Reston's Rev. Ronald Winters and wife Janice Winters, held its Back to School "Jesus and Me" event on Wednesday night. School supplies were distributed free of charge, there was a prayer for the children. Hunter Mills Supervisor Cathy Hudgins stopped by to offer words of encouragement for the students - challenging them "to be leaders in the classroom and the community."

Police still searching for suspect who attempted to abduct a woman at about 8 p.m. on Aug. 5.
On Sunday evening, a man tried to abduct a woman in the 2400 block of Silk Court just off of Frying Pan Road in the 20171 area of Herndon, according to Fairfax County Police. Public Information Officer Lucy Caldwell said the 28-year-old victim had been driving in the area on Frying Pan Road around 8 p.m., heading toward Monroe Street. She stopped in the 2400 block of Silk Court and exited her vehicle. After the woman got out she was approached by a man holding a pistol who grabbed her and ordered her to come with him, Caldwell said. The victim screamed, the suspect let go of her and she fled. Local nonprofit will host fundraiser in Herndon Friday evening.
Local cancer charity Cindy's Legacy will host its first major fundraiser, a golf clinic at Herndon Centennial Golf Course on Friday. The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. and features lessons, a round with the pro and refreshments. Tickets are $35 or $12 if you want to skip the golf and go directly to networking and happy hour. Martin was a local hair stylist who was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the fall of 2010 and died in February of 2011. At the time Lucinda was attacked earlier this month, the person believed responsible for the previous attacks was still incarcerated.
The attacks on the SPIRIT Open Equestrian Program’s horse, Lucinda, have prompted the Humane Society of the United States to offer a reward of up to $2,500. The reward will be given for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the second knife attack on her. Lucinda was one of three of SPIRIT’s horses that was injured in April. She was cut again earlier this month. The original person believed responsible was apprehended by Fairfax County police, but not before attacking four more animals at Frying Pan Farm Park in May. LINK, a Christian, all-volunteer organization, is in need of volunteers to pick up food from Trader Joe's grocery store in Reston and deliver it to the organization's Herndon food pantry. Each Friday and Saturday night Trader Joe's bags up food that is being donated to LINK. LINK delivers emergency food to families who need assistance in Herndon, Sterling and Ashburn. Volunteers will pick up the food at Trader Joe's at 9 p.m. and bring it to LINK's pantry. The volunteers would also need to move items that need refrigeration into the refrigerators and freezers in the pantry, and items that don't need refrigeration can be left for volunteers to sort the next morning. SPIRIT Open Equestrian Program horse was also injured in April attacks near Frying Pan Park; teen suspect in earlier incidents still at detention center
A horse that was among the animals attacked at a paddock near Frying Pan Park this April was the victim of another attack this weekend at 2625 Centreville Rd. Fairfax County police said the injured horse, Lucinda, suffered cuts and wounds sometime between 8 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the paddock, adjacent to Frying Pan Farm Park. Lucinda is one of the SPIRIT Open Equestrian program's horses and was previously injured with a knife on April 26; police said the wounds are not life threatening. The incident is the third in a series of animal attacks in the area this year, all of which have occurred during overnight hours.
