South Lakes teacher and Herndon soccer coach, falsely accused of molestation, sued the school system for legal costs reimbursement. The school system spent more than Sean Lanigan was asking in their own legal fees to battle him.

The team is looking to expand on last year's state tournament success.
The Herndon Varsity Cheerleaders won the Concorde District Champions for the third year in a row on Tuesday. Chantilly finished in second place. The team took third place at the state finals in 2011. The squad moves on to regional competition. The state tournament is Nov. 10 in Richmond.

Herndon High School has advanced to the 16-team Northern Region Field Hockey Tournament with a school record 12 wins. The Hornets will play an away game at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the loser of Monday’s Mount Vernon vs. Yorktown National District Final Game. The Hornets have tallied regular season wins against both Mount Vernon (1-0, Sept. 22) and opened the season with a road win against Yorktown (3-0, Aug. 23). The Hornets will likely have to play without the dynamic sophomore forward Sofia Palacios (14 Goals, 18 assists, All District Tournament) after Palacios suffered a head injury during the Concorde District Semifinal game against Oakton on Oct. 17. Elden Street to close for parade route.
This weekend is Herndon High School's annual Homecoming and the festivities include a parade, football game, powder puff game, bonfire and much more. Some roads in town will be closing to through traffic on Saturday to clear the way for the parade to make its way through town. Here's what you need to know: • Elden Street will be closed from Lynn Street to Sterling Road. • Sterling Road will be closed from Elden Street to Herndon Parkway. Those leaving from side streets will be able to exit. • Lynn Street in the downtown area will be closed, and it may be difficult to get anywhere in the core of downtown on Station and Spring streets as well. It's Homecoming week at Herndon High School.
It's that time of year, when people prepare to walk down Elden Street or line up to watch as Homecoming takes over the town. This year's Herndon Homecoming Parade will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday down Elden Street leading to downtown Herndon. The football game will be against Washington and Lee High School at 1 p.m. Saturday at Herndon High School. HHS students will celebrate with a homecoming dance Saturday evening. This year's homecoming theme is Childhood Nostalgia. For Herndon students celebrating Spirit Week, Tuesday will be Cartoon Day, Wednesday is Childhood Idol Day, Thursday is Toy Day and Friday is Class Color Day. SLHS, Herndon students among 299 FCPS students earning honor.
Four South Lakes High School students and two Herndon High Schools students are among the 229 Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) students named semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) for 2013. Semifinalists are eligible to compete for 8,300 National Merit Scholarship awards worth $32 million, to be awarded in spring 2013. Area semifinalists: South Lakes High School: Kelsey Ericksen, Dara Kharabi, Adrienne Nims, and Scott Reid. Herndon High School: Margaret Schaaf and Isaac Yampolsky. Herndon and South Lakes high schools will raise money for Reston Interfaith.
The Herndon Hornets and South Lakes Seahawks announced on Friday that they would be raising money for Reston Interfaith through Help the Homeless Walk events this fall. Each school will see who can get the most participants at their Help the Homeless Walks this October as part of their homecoming celebrations. The announcement was made during the HHS vs SLHS football game by principals Kimberly Retzer and William Bates. Through November 4 a number of area schools and organizations will hold Help the Homeless Walks to benefit Reston Interfaith. Those in the Herndon and Reston communities are invited to particpate. South Lakes High School won the annual Baron Cameron Bowl, 21-7; the schools will have a friendly competition for Reston Interfaith's Help the Homeless walk.
Herndon High School’s JL Griffiths Stadium was packed Friday night as South Lakes came to visit for the annual Baron Cameron Bowl. It was Herndon’s first home game of the season. South Lakes took the lead in the second quarter with a little over three minutes left. The score was 7-0 going into halftime. With 1:49 left in the third period, an 8-yard run led to another touchdown for the Seahawks. After an extra-point kick by South Lakes’ Jeremiah Norman, the score was 14-0 going into the fourth quarter. With 7:46 left in the fourth quarter, South Lakes scored a third touchdown, taking the game to 21-0, but Herndon wouldn’t let the Seahawks walk away with a shut out. The South Lakes Seahawks traveled to Herndon High School Friday, where they won the Baron Cameron Bowl 21-7. It was only the Seahawks' (1-1) second win over the Hornets (0-2) since 2002. After an almost scoreless first half, the Seahawks took the lead first on a Rashaan Jones' pass to junior wide receiver Akram Gibreel with 3:08 remaining. Jones heaved a third-down pass up the middle of the field toward Zac Parker late in the second quarter. Parker and Herndon's Darrius Hicks battled for the ball, and Gibreel, trailing the play, picked the tipped football out of mid-air for a 75-yard touchdown pass and a 7-0 Seahawks halftime lead. South Lakes football travels to Herndon Friday for annual matchup.
They may play football in different conferences and one team may have the historical advantage, but the annual Baron Cameron Bowl brings out the neighborhood spirit for South Lakes and Herndon High Schools. The schools are geographically close and, of course, North Reston residents attend Herndon High School. Many of the students grew up attending the same elementary schools and playing youth sports together. South Lakes (0-1) will travel to Herndon (also 0-1) on Friday for the annual matchup.
