Photo of the Day: Fox Mill Facelift

The management of Fox Mill Shopping Center has been hard at work for a over a month on a new look. Crews are revamping the signage and roof line of the center. They are just beginning the big piece: the Giant Foods store, which has thousands of cedar shingles as part of the exterior.

Herndon Man Dies in Dranesville Road Accident

Driver charged with felony hit and run, no operator's license and filing a false police report.

A Herndon man, who has not yet been identified, is dead after a single-vehicle accident that occurred at about 3 a.m. Saturday morning on Dranesville Road.  Fairfax County police have arrested the driver of that vehicle, Elixavier Ramirez, 23, of Herndon, in connection with the accident.  The victim, a man in his early 30s, was a passenger in a 1997 BMW. He was ejected from the vehicle after the driver allegedly lost control and ran off the right side of the roadway near Butter Church Drive.  Police have not yet released the victim's name. The driver of the vehicle allegedly ran over the victim when he attempted to continue driving after the accident.  Police located the driver and another passenger several hours later after they had fled …

Herndon Teen Hera Morgan Reported Missing

Herndon Police Department says Hera Morgan, 14, was last seen Dec. 27, could be with friend whose sedan has Virginia tags WVP-4729.

The Herndon Police Department is asking for help in locating a missing 14-year-old girl from Herndon. Hera T. Morgan, 14, has not been seen since Dec. 27, the department said in a release Tuesday night about the missing teen.  Hera is a black female, 5 feet 7 inches tall, about 125 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Her birthday is May 29, 1998. Herndon Police say her current whereabouts are unknown, but she may be in the company of Nicole or Jerome Reaves, of Sterling, in a 2012 four-door Chevy sedan with the Virginia license plate WVP-4729. Routine Traffic Violation Ends in Police Chase Near Herndon High School

The driver of an SUV fled after Herndon police tried to pull them over, eventually striking another car.

An SUV led a Herndon police officer on a pursuit in the Herndon Parkway and Dranesville Road area after the officer attempted to stop the driver for a routine traffic violation at about 7:15 this morning.  The pursuit ended in the area of Herndon High School. The SUV drove northbound at a high rate of speed, running a red light at the intersection of Dranesville Road and Wiehle Avenue, striking a vehicle at the intersection.  The driver of the SUV lost control, rolling the vehicle several times before coming to a stop. The driver and a passenger in the SUV were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Herndon Cheer's Cinderella Season

Herndon High School Varsity Co-Ed Cheer won the Virginia state finals on Nov. 10.

The members of the Herndon High School Co-Ed Cheer Team have been on cloud nine since the team’s win at the Virginia state finals on Nov. 10. “I’m so ecstatic,” said head coach Jenny Goff. She said the sports banquet, held Nov. 15, was a beautiful, bittersweet moment for the team. While preparing for the team to perform its routine at states, Goff said she felt incredibly proud the team had made it to states. “We had no idea what was going to be ahead of us,” she said. “Out honest goal was just to place top five.” Goff said when the team performed the first time at states they broke down in tears afterward. The team was proud to have maxed out their routine and was pleased with what could have been the last time they would take the floor. …

Herndon Middle Stomps Out Bullying

Howard University's Drew Hall Step Team visits Herndon Middle School for anti-bullying event.

Herndon Middle School students gathered to Stomp Out Bullying last week with a number of special guests. Members of the Drew Hall Step Team from Howard University, as well as the Herndon High School Step Team, performed on stage, sharing messages to help students Stomp Out Bullying. The Herndon Middle School Step Team opened up the show.  Principal Justine Klena said administrators decided two years ago they wanted to focus on bullying and educating students on how to deal with bullying. She said the goal was to focus on reducing the number of bullying incidents reported.  The school began with pledges and a week-long anti-bullying event. Last year students received bracelets and a speaker came to address the topic of bullying.  This year…

Herndon High Co-Ed Cheer Takes Top Spot at State Finals

State finals were held Saturday night at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

The Herndon High School Co-Ed Cheer Team took the top spot at the VHSL State Cheer Championships at Virginia Commonwealth University on Saturday night.  The team took first place with 280.5 points, followed by Fairfax High School with 276 points and Grassfield High with 269 points. Herndon scored the second highest score in VHSL history.  This is the first time Herndon's varsity Co-Ed Cheer Team has won the state chamionship. Herndon Advances to Field Hockey Regionals

The 12-6 Hornets play Tuesday night.

Herndon High School has advanced to the 16-team Northern Region Field Hockey Tournament with a school record 12 wins. The Hornets will play an away game at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the loser of Monday’s Mount Vernon vs. Yorktown National District Final Game. The Hornets have tallied regular season wins against both Mount Vernon (1-0, Sept. 22) and opened the season with a road win against Yorktown (3-0, Aug. 23). The Hornets will likely have to play without the dynamic sophomore forward Sofia Palacios (14 Goals, 18 assists, All District Tournament) after Palacios suffered a head injury during the Concorde District Semifinal game against Oakton on Oct. 17. Sunny weather made for a perfect parade day.

Area residents turned out in droves to celebrate homecoming in Herndon as the parade took over downtown Herndon Saturday morning. During the parade the town celebrated its new logo and branding with an announcement, banners, T-shirts, stickers and balloons.
