Should Loaded Guns Be Allowed in July 4th March from Virginia into DC?

Group says they plan "open carry march" from Virginia into Washington, DC.

Talk about fireworks. A group that says it plans to march from Virginia into DC on the Fourth of July with loaded guns — a violation of DC gun laws — is being met with resistance by DC's Chief of Police Cathy Lanier. "Passing into the district with loaded firearms is a violation of the law and it will be treated as such,” Lanier said during an interview with NewsChannel 8. Lanier says police will stop the march on the Arlington Memorial Bridge, mentioned as the route to be taken by the group. A Facebook page set up by organizer Adam Kokesh, an Iraq war veteran and radio talk-show host, calls it an "Open Carry March" and reads: "On the morning of July 4, 2013, Independence Day, we will muster at the National Cemetery and at noon we will …

Fairfax County Organizing Gun Turn-In Days

Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova wants county's gun turn-in service better publicized.

After the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last month, Fairfax County officials are looking into hosting events for residents to hand over unwanted guns for destruction. Sharon Bulova, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, asked staff during the Board’s meeting Tuesday to publicize more heavily the county’s existing gun turn-in service so residents might be encouraged to get rid of their firearms. “Many residents have contacted my office to voice concern regarding guns,” Bulova said. “Most residents do not realize that Fairfax County provides a voluntary gun turn-in service.” Unwanted or unneeded firearms and ammunition can be turned into the Fairfax County Police Department. David Rohrer, deputy …

Connolly Urges $200 Million Gun Buyback

Forty House members sign letter backing proposed program added to any end-of-the-year fiscal cliff deal.

A letter co-written by Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-11th), and signed by 40 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, urges Republican House Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to support an immediate $200 million gun buyback program in any end-of-the-year fiscal cliff deal. Connolly, whose district includes Reston as well as the national headquarters for the NRA, and U.S. Rep. Ted Deutch of Florida authored the letter to the House leaders.  “Gun buybacks have proven successful in communities across the nation,” Connolly and Deutch said in a “Dear Colleague” to House members. “Adding $200 million to the final compromise on the fiscal cliff could remove as many as one million guns from our streets.”  Including the …

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. There isn't even any such thing as the "gun show loophole," those are simply person to person sales done at a gun show that could also be done anywhere else. Do you advocate we close the Burger King Parking Lot Loophole? Educate yourself before looking like a fool again.   more ›

Gun Owners Weigh in On the Future

What should Virginia, and America, do about gun violence?

Reverberations from last week's school shooting in Connecticut are still being felt across the nation. The death of 20 children and six adults at the hands of a lone gunman has some reconsidering their stance on firearm usage in the United States and in the Commonwealth.    The shooting has motivated Virginia Sen. Janet Howell (D-Reston) to reintroduce a bill that would close the Commonwealth's gun show loophole, which can allow people to buy firearms at gun shows without a background check.  "It's tragic. I don't now whether I'm more angry or sad over it (the shooting)," said Howell. "I hope at this point we have reached a tipping point. One thing everyone agrees on is that access should be limited to keeping guns from mentally ill people…
