Basketball: SLHS Girls Fall in State Tourney

Seahawks ousted in 55-53 loss to Stonewall Jackson.

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team postseason run came to an end Friday in a 55-53 loss to Manassas Stonewall Jackson in a Virginia AAA state tournament quarterfinal game at Robinson High School. The Seahawks (23-6) wrap up a stellar season in which the team, ranked in the Washington Post's Top 20 for much of the season, advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 1986. But even with several injured players, No. 10 Stonewall Jackson (24-3) held off the Seahawks down the stretch for the victory - the 16th straight for the Raiders. Stonewall Jackson was led by Nicole Floyd with 16 points and Amanda Hinton with 14. The Raiders will play Princess Anne in a state semifinal game Monday in Richmond. South Lakes was led …

SLHS Girls Ready for State Basketball Play

Seahawks face Stonewall Jackson Friday in VHSL Class AAA Tournament.

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team is preparing for a place it has not been since 1986 - the Class AAA Virginia Basketball Tournament. The Seahawks advanced to the tournament by finishing second in the Northern Region after a 60-52 loss to Edison in the Regional Final on Saturday. Friday at 6:45 p.m., they face Manassas Stonewall Jackson (23-3) in a state quarterfinal game at Robinson High School. The Seahawks are 23-5 and showed their determination by winning four of their postseason games by a margin of three points of fewer. SLHS Girls Earn Spot in State Tournament

Basketball team tops defending champs Oakton for first spot in states since 1986.

South Lakes girls basketball team held off defending Virginia Class AAA state champion Oakton Thursday night for a 48-46 victory, earning a spot in the Northern Region final and a place in the 2013 state tournament. The game was tied at 32 going into the fourth quarter, but the Seahawks scored the next nine points.The Cougars pulled within one point with five second left in the game, but junior Collette Toma hit free throws with seconds remaining to seal the victory. South Lakes makes its first trip to the regional final and state tourney since 1986, when Seahawks coach Christy Winters Scott was the teams star player. Basketball: SLHS Girls In Regional Semis

Buzzer-beater lifts Seahawks past Mt. Vernon.

A shot by South Lakes junior Caitlin Jensen at the buzzer lifted the Seahawks past Mount Vernon in girls Northern Region basketball play Tuesday night and boosted South Lakes into the Regional semifinals for the first time since 1997. With seven seconds remaining, senior Gabrielle Schultz grabbed a steal. Sasha Sprei split the defense to find Jensen, who knocked down the final shot and gave South Lakes (22-4) a 46-45 victory. "I am extremely proud of our team, and the resilience and focus down the stretch," said SLHS coach Christy Winters Scott. Basketball: SLHS Girls Top Chantilly, 42-40

Seahawks win first game in Northern Region play.

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team overcame a five-point halftime deficit to top Chantily 42-20 in the first round of the VHSL Northern Region Tournament. South Lakes (21-4) outscored Chantilly 20-13 in the second half.  Gabrielle Schulz scored the Seahawks' first nine points and was key to the team's defense. She finished with 13 points, six rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot. Center Abigail Rendle finished with eight points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks. The team plays 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Vernon High School in the Regional round of eight.

Basketball: SLHS Girls Bounced from Districts

Madison upsets No. 1 seed Seahawks in Liberty District Semis.

The top-seeded South Lakes High School girls basketball team was bounced from the Liberty District Tournament in a 55-52 upset by Madison Thursday at South Lakes. Madison's Megan LeDuc hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to seal the victory for the Warhawks. The Seahawks fell behind in the second quarter, when the fourth-seed Warhawks held them to just seven points. South Lakes trailed 31-23 at halftime. The Seahawks caught up in the second half and were down by two when Abigail Rendle hit a jumper on the baseline to tie with four seconds to go, but Leduc's shot from half court put the game away. Former SLHS Player Reaches College Milestone

Kelcyn Manurs reaches 1,000 career points at Livingstone College.

Former South Lakes High School girls basketball player Kelcyn Manurs recently scored her 1,000th career point for Livingstone College in North Carolina. Manurs, the 2009 Liberty District player of the year and a senior co-captain of her colllege team, earned the honor in a 27-point performance against Fayetteville State this week. Even though Manurs graduated from SLHS nearly four years ago, Manurs mother, Cynthia, continues as  the statistician for the current Seahawks girls basketball team.

Basketball: SLHS Girls End McLean's Streak

Seahawks stop Highlanders 11-game run with 53-45 victory at home.

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team ended McLean's 11-game winning streak with a 53-45 victory at South Lakes on Friday. With the victory, the Seahawks, ranked No. 18 by the Washington Post, improve to 14-2 overall (7-1 Liberty District). McLean is 12-4, 6-2 Liberty.  McLean scored at the buzzer to end the first quarter tied at 16. But the Seahawks outscored the Highlanders 37-29 the rest of the way to keep their hold on the top spot in the conference. Junior guard Caitlin Jensen led South Lakes with 14 points. She had a game-high three three-pointers and also had three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Basketball: South Lakes Girls Topple Madison

Rendle leads Seahawks for a 10-point victory.

South Lakes High School came back from a one-point halftime deficit Friday to defeat James Madison 55-45 in a league game that solidified the Seahawks place atop the Liberty District.  The team improves to 13-2 (6-1 Liberty) and first place in the conference. Madison is now 6-5 (4-2 Liberty). South Lakes outscored the Warhawks 30-19 in the second half to pull away with the win. The close score was a far cry from the teams' most recent memorable matchup in 2012, when Madison took the Liberty District title from South Lakes with a 78-47 win. The Seahawks, ranked No. 19 by the Washington Post, were led by junior center Abigail Rendle, who led all scorers with 16 points. She also added 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. …

Basketball: SLHS Girls Earn No. 14 Ranking

Seahawks' 11-1 record and tournament championship gives them a spot in the Washington Post's girls basketball Top 20.

After winning the IAABO Holiday Classic with a 42-34 victory over West Springfield on Friday, the South Lakes girls basketball team has earned a top-20 ranking by the Washington Post sports section.  The 11-1 Seahawks, coached by SLHS alum Christy Winters Scott, have won 10 in a row and enter the Post list ranked No. 14. This is the first time during Winters Scott's eight seasons that the Seahawks have been ranked. "It is not really surprising, because I know the  girls have put in a lot of work," said Winters Scott. "We have 10 regular-season games left and our expectations are to be successful. At the beginning of the season, we did not put a number on where we wanted to be, we just wanted to get better every day." The team's only loss …
