Reston National BZA Hearing Postponed Again

Board of Zoning Appeals hearing now set for September.

Reston National Golf Course's appeal with the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals has been delayed once again - this time until September. RN Golf Management, the course owners, asked for the delay of the May 22 hearing. The new hearing date is now Sept. 25. This is the fourth extension. The hearing was originally supposed to take place in September 2012, then October, January and finally May. The saga of the 166-acre public course's future has been going on for nearly a year. Last April, the RB Golf Management, a subsidiary of Northwestern Mutual Insurance, asked Fairfax County Zoning if the course can be considered residential rather than open space. Zoning said no, and that is when the golf course owners filed an appeal, sparking …

A New Deal For Reston National Golf Course?

Reston2020 reports that Fairfax County and golf course owners may be working on plan for housing and a big central park.

Are Fairfax County and RN Golf Management close to making a deal to bring residential housing - along with a big park - to Reston National Golf Course? Reston Citizens Association group Reston2020 says they may be. Reston2020 reports on its blog that a secret deal is in the works that will set aside a substantial portion of the golf course for a large Reston central park.   Reston2020 sources say an option is being explored to have the developer proffer land for a park in return for being granted rental unit density.   "Another source indicates that [Northwestern Mutual, RN Golf Management's parent company] is testing the market among several major area developers to see if the golf course can be sold for commercial development purposes.  …

In summer, my yard hosts more butterflies than Meadowlark Gardens. It may be that my visits to the former were when the winged creatures were not in evidence, but we did have countless numbers of them last summer. It was so gratifying to know that we had provided them with a suitable habitat. Will miss that when the dozers start. Hope they will notify us when the tree fellings begin, also. Hate …   more ›

Golf Course Appeal to Be Heard Jan. 30

Reston National Golf Course owners get new date for officials to hear zoning appeal

RN Golf Management has a new date with the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals: Jan. 30. The ownership group of Reston National Golf Course was supposed to go before the BZA on Oct. 24, but this week requested a deferral of the hearing so it could have more time to prepare. The issue dates back to last April, when RN Golf Management, which is owned by a subsidiary of Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, asked county zoning officials if the golf course was zoned residential. When the zoning officials said the golf course was not residential and to designate it residential would involve a change to the county master plan, the owners filed the zoning appeal. The looming appeal has galvanized local groups, which are adamant the 166-acre golf…

Everyone that I talk to in Reston is completely against all of this massive development going on, so how do the same officials promoting such keep getting re-elected? I grew up here, and I'm truly disturbed by the transformation that is taking place at the hands of county and state representatives (Which means that it is out of our hands, aside from being able to change who we elect to represent …   more ›

Reston National Owners Postpone Zoning Appeal

Appeal on status of Reston National moved from Oct. 24 to January.

The fight for the future of Reston National Golf Course will continue into 2013 as the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals hearing scheduled for Oct. 24 has been deferred until January. The hearing was deferred at the request of the golf course owner, RN Golf Management. The looming appeal has galvanized local groups, which are adamant the 166-acre golf course should remain open space. Reston Association and Reston Citizens Association have vowed to fight redevelopment, and a grassroots organization, Rescue Reston, has mobilized since July. "We will not be moved," said Rescue Reston executive director John Pinkman. "We live here, we are not going anywhere. If anything, this delay helps us get better organized and communicate our message…

Thanks so much, Karen! Let's make a mental note to remember that with the new year, those of us who care about preserving what we know as Reston won't forget to stay mindful and take the appropriate action in January..   more ›
