Census: DC-Area Commute Second-Longest

Reston-area residents have a slightly shorter commute than other areas in the region with an average of 28 minutes.

If you're sitting in traffic on the Dulles Toll Road or Reston Parkway, this morning, you should know you at least have it better than some other drivers in the region. While commuters as a whole in the Washington metropolitan area have the second-longest commutes in the nation, according to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average for Reston zip codes is about 27.5 minutes -  is a few minutes below the average for the DC area as a whole. The average travel time to work in DC was 34.5 minutes in 2011, according to numbers released by the bureau Tuesday. In Reston, most drivers spend about 28 minutes commuting to work, according to data from Slate.com The longest commute time was found in the New York City metro area, with average …

The metro is cheaper than driving when you account for gas + tolls. Using HOV I can get to/from DC (Farragut W) in 35 minutes at best. But it can also take 1.5 hrs+. Sunset Hills P&R->West Falls Church->My office in Farragut W is consistently a 45 min commute. Add 10-15 mins for travel+wait time from my home doorstep.   more ›

Report: DC-Area Traffic is The Worst

Reston commuters may spend an extra $1,398 per year in gas and time sitting in traffic, according to report.

We’re No. 1 — but it’s really not a good thing. Traffic congestion in the Washington, DC,metro area has been ranked worst in the country by the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI).  The study rates our region’s traffic worse than San Francisco-Oakland, Los Angeles, New York-Newark and Boston. This is not the first time D.C. has been ranked No. 1. The area tied with Chicago for the honor in 2011. Never miss any Reston transportation and Silver Line news. Subscribe to Reston Patch's free daily newsletter. TTI’s Urban Mobility Report, released Tuesday, includes a “Planning Time Index,” which measures “travel reliability.” That factor designates “the amount of extra time needed to arrive on time for higher priority events, such as an airline …

The only US city that is "recession proof" because of big govt spending, and the only road into the city from the west is two lanes. Our infrastructure has been out of date for 30 years... Let us pray that the overly utilized, overly expensive, un-trustworthy metro saves us... I'm not holding my breath! What now takes an express bus from Wiehle to the pentagon (which they are eliminating to force…   more ›

Report: D.C. Traffic Lightest Friday Mornings

Report by Inrix for Governing magazine shows weekday traffic patterns

The Washington, D.C. area's best — as in shortest — weekday commute is on Friday mornings, according to data compiled by Inrix for Governing magazine. But the rest of Friday is tricky—the Friday afternoon commute in the D.C. area is the worst of the week, according to the report. The reasoning behind the best/worst commute day? Mornings are likely light due to federal employees taking advantage of telecommuting policies, the report said. And Friday afternoon is probably the worst due to people traveling for the weekend through the area on I-95 and the Beltway. The report showed that D.C. ranked nonth in the country for Friday commutes and its traffic on Fridays is 25 percent longer than without any congestion. That adds nearly eight …
