It is not yet known what we will be built on the Crescent site, but there will be units set aside for affordable housing, as per county regulations. However, VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) and community leaders are concerned that the current income criteria (in the Request for Proposals) could displace many residents. Two programs - including one at Reston National Golf Course - look at Reston's community of wildlife, people and places.
Reston National Golf Course is not just for golfers - it is also home to a variety of wildlife, plants and trees. The Reston Historic Trust invites you to join them on a nature walk at 1 p.m. Saturday to get to know some of the flora and fauna of Reston National Golf Course. The golf course has been in the news recently because of a potential plan for redevelopment that would likely interfere with some of the course's wildlife. Read more about the story on our Reston National Golf Course Redevelopment topic page. RN Golf Management, the course owners, will go before the Fairfax County Board of Zoning Appeals on May 22. They are appealing a 2012 county zoining decision that said the course is not classified as residential. Saturday's walk …

Hudgins says she hopes to move forward in redevelopment process this spring.
Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins says she hopes to have narrowed down the list of proposals for Lake Anne-area revitalization within the next 60 days. Hudgins told the Reston Association Board of Directors at a planning session this week that there is not an ultimate solution for redevelopment yet. "Hopefully, in the next 60 days, we will be able to move forward," Hudgins said. "The good news is we have some good opportunities." It has been over a year since Fairfax County released a Request for Proposal (RFP) for Crescent Apartments near Lake Anne. Crescent is owned by Fairfax County and was acquired in 2006 as part of the goal of adding additional affordable housing units in the area. The 16-acre, 180-unit development was built in …

Community planner's ideas impacted Reston, where he was a resident for 46 years.
Patrick Kane, a community planner who was instrumental in the development of Reston and was still concerned about the area 50 years later, died of lung cancer on Tuesday, his 77th birthday. Kane was the founding president of the the Reston Board of Commerce (later renamed the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce) and chair of the Chamber from 1982-86. He was chosen as Lord Fairfax by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in 2010 for his contributions to the community. "Pat was a guy who had more thoughts per square inch than anyone I have ever known," said Reston founder Robert E. Simon. "He was a good man. I enjoyed his sense of humor and was impressed by his imagination." Karen Cleveland, the chamber's first executive director, recalls …

Donation will help produce film to run in 2014 - Reston's 50th birthday and Reston founder Robert E. Simon's 100th birthday.
Reston Association will give up to $20,000 to a local film production company that is making a film about Reston's first 50 years. The RA Board of Directors voted last week at its regular monthly meeting to give the donation to Storycatcher Productions. The decision had been tabled from the board's Dec. 13 meeting. RA president Ken Knueven said at the December meeting that the film will be a permanent legacy in telling the story of Reston, so the Reston Association should support it. The movie, tentatively titled The Reston Story: A Film About Reston, Virginia - The First 50 Years, will tell the story from Reston's beginnings as farmland purchased by founder Robert E. Simon for $1,500 an acre. The movie is part of the 2014 celebration of …

There will be changes during construction which might take two years or longer when very few or any current residents will remain in the current units. However, in time this could be great for Lake Anne which has declined over the years as the rest of Reston boomed. And affordable housing as part of a larger diverse development should be better than a exclusive low income housing concentrated in …   more ›
