Comcast Offers Low-Cost Internet To Needy Students

Comcast launches a program that will provide broadband access for just $9.95 a month for qualified families.

All parents know that probably the most important school supply students need is a computer with Internet access. Homework assignments require research, creating presentations, preparing papers and accessing online classroom sites.  Parents communicate with teachers and school administrators using email and school websites.  Grade books, school schedules and other resources have entered the digital world because schools save the printing costs associated with paper handouts and newsletters. For all of us, the cost of a computer and broadband Internet is significant. Some of you are right. Some people do abuse the help that is given to them, but just because there are some people out there that do doesn't mean all people reciving assistance abuse this help. I came from a low income home growing up and yes my mother needed help. She had six kids. But you bett your butt we didn't have that hottest sneakers, phones ect. We got what we could afford. Moviemaking, Reston Style

Imagine if the black plague hit Northern Virginia in 2011, with germ warfare and people running and screaming and fighting for their lives. It's a plot that Ruben Najera has been thinking about for 15 years. He is turning it into a web series titled Anubis, which he hopes to begin airing this fall. Najera, a producer at Comcast Cable's Reston studio, is the producer, director, writer, editor and financier of Anubis (named for the Egyptian god of death). Najera's crew has shot scenes at the Walker Nature Education Center's Nature House. On Monday night, they also took over Market Street at Reston Town Center to shoot scenes. Considering that this is such a low budget production, I felt I was on a big movie set. The actors and the crew were very professional. The residents of Reston were so supportive and excited for Ruben. The event grabbed the attention of many pedestrians, who inquired about the director, asked questions about the scene being filmed, and the name of the actors.
