What is on your holiday cards this year?
The White House Christmas card this year features a painting of Bo, the Obamas' four-year-old Portuguese water dog. The reproduction of an oil painting by Des Moines, Iowa artist Laressa Kabel features the pooch prancing through the snow on the South Lawn of the White House wearing a winter scarf. Each year the coveted cards are created by work commissioned by an artist or from a photograph taken at the White House. In her book "Season's Greetings from the White House," published in 2007, historian Mary Seeley delves into the details of the annual White House Christmas card, from Calvin Coolidge to George W. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Earlier this month, PNC Bank released its 2012 Christmas Price Index documenting how much it would cost to buy the characters and objects from the song, "The 12 Days of Christmas." Last year, the number topped the $100,000 mark. This year, it grew 6.1 percent to $107,300. Cops stopped at Terraset Elementary School Tuesday as part of a tour to pick up toys for hospitalized kids.
A police motorcycle motorcade rolled into Reston's Terraset Elementary School on Tuesday, but it was all in the spirit of the season. Santa's Ride For The Children is a countywide effort to collect toys for hospitalized children at Christmas. Terraset students - along with kids at nine other Fairfax County elementary schools - were encouraged to bring donations of new toys and games to school. On Tuesday, Fairfax County Police officers, along with help from the Vienna Police Department, Virginia State Police and other local agencies, came by, accompanied by some special guests. The donations will be delivered to Inova Fairfax Hospital and other local facilities.

Thanks to a very special U.S. Postal Service program, "Santa" will reply to children who mail him their Christmas wish lists this holiday season.
Every year, millions of children sit down to make a wish list for Santa, hoping he will make all of their Christmas dreams come true. But what if Santa actually wrote back? The United States Postal Service is now accepting "Letters From Santa," a program that allows any person to play Santa by sending a letter signed by Saint Nick to any child. According to a postal service news release, "The 'Letters From Santa' program helps parents fulfill the dreams of their own children." Instructions to send a letter from Santa: You can drop off letters at the Reston Post Office, 11110 Sunset Hills Rd.

Jingle on Lake Anne features Santa Claus on a barge.
Santa returns to Lake Anne Plaza Saturday, arriving via barge at noon sharp. The jolly guy's appearance is part of Jingle on Lake Anne, which takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with lots of holiday fun for the whole family. There will be strolling carolers, a petting zoo, wine tastings, merchant specials, children’s crafts, cookie decorating, holiday arts & crafts market and holiday entertainment. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the Lake Anne Merchants Association.
