At IAABO tournament, Rendle scores first triple-double.
South Lakes High School's girls basketball team improved to 9-1 overall with a 55-47 victory over CH Flowers at the IAABO Holiday Classic in Maryland on Wednesday. Abigail Rendle scored her first career triple-double with with 10 points, 12 rebounds and school-record 16 blocks. It was the eighth victory in a row for the Seahawks, who have not lost a game since Nov. 29. The team advances to the seminfinals against Gwynn Park at 6 p.m.on Thursday.

Girls basketball keeps win streak going.
Both of South Lakes High School's varsity basketball teams began winter break with victories over Thomas Jefferson on Friday. The girls team won its seventh straight in an 89-35 blowout. Sophomore Princess Aghayere lead with career highs - 21 points and 16 rebounds. Sasha Sprei added nine assists. Only one TJ player (Minh Bui, 10 points) scored in double figures. South Lakes (8-1 overall, 4-0 Liberty District) will play C.H. Flowers at the 40th annual IAABO Invitational tournament in Largo, MD on Dec. 26. Tip-off time is 6 p.m. The boys team (3-5, 2-2 Liberty) ended a three-game losing skid with its 49-41 victory over Jefferson. Indoor track teams have strong showing at Robinson Invitational.
South Lakes High School's track and field continued its strong season at the four-team Robinson Invitational last weekend. Winning their events and qualifying for the Northern Region hampionships were Ashkan Mohammadi in the 1600 meter run; the girls’ 4x200 relay of Symone Damper, Jordan Lozama, Rodneia Mitchell, and Danielle Hale; and the girls’ 4x400 relay of Grace Gillen, Haley Vaughn, Claire Nieusma and Delaney Wickman. Winning their events and qualifying for state championships were Michael McHugh in the 1000 meter and the boys’ 4x200 relay of Aeron Thai, Rashaan Jones, Daniel Johnsen and Zac Parker. Boys and girls basketball teams earn Liberty District wins over Stone Bridge; Wrestlers earn four medals at NOVA Classic.
South Lakes High School's boys and girls basketball teams both started off their Liberty District basketball schedules with victories at Stone Bridge on Friday. Brandon Kamga scored 27 points to lead the boys team to a 51-43 victory over the Bulldogs. The team is now 2-2 overall, 1-0 Liberty. The girls defeated Stone Bridge 59-40 to improve to 4-1 overall, 1-0 Liberty. Four players scored in double figures for the Seahawks, who had a 23-5 lead in the first quarter. Seahawks boys basketball looks to build on last year's 15-win record.
South Lakes High School's four boys basketball captains know how it feels to lose. Clayton O’Neill, Evan Keys, Junior Ebott and Brandon Kamga played some of their best basketball down the stretch last year and helped the Seahawks end the regular season on a five-game win streak. Then it all came to an abrupt end. Thomas Jefferson, which won just eight regular-season games, squeezed out a 66-62 upset victory over South Lakes in the first round of the Liberty District tournament to prematurely end the Seahawks’ season. Seahawks finish up West Springfield Tournament on Tuesday, while boys team travels to Osbourn Park.
The South Lakes High School Girls Basketball team went 1-1 in the first two rounds of the West Springfield Tip Off Tournament. In the first game, played Thursday, South Lakes lost to host West Springfield 44-43. Neither team led by more than two possessions throughout the game, and South Lakes had a five-point lead at the half. The Seahawks held a one-point lead with less than 30 seconds remaining, but West Springfield got a shot to fall with 13 seconds to go to take the lead by one. South Lakes High School girls basketball coach Christy Winters Scott molding strong character as well as strong player.
When Christy Winters Scott took the girls basketball coaching job at South Lakes High School in 2005, she inherited an embattled squad that didn’t win a single game the previous season. Just three years later, in 2008, her team produced 19 wins and she earned Liberty District Coach of the Year honors. Much can be said for Winters Scott’s immediate impact on the court, but the former University of Maryland basketball star's blueprint for success heavily focuses on molding high-character players off the court. “I feel that if you have a strong purpose in whatever you’re doing, you’re going to be successful at it,” said Winters Scott, who coached at George Mason and Georgetown before returning to her alma mater. “Purpose is power, and it’s …

Herndon High School announced that coach Gary Hall will take the helm as the head boys basketball coach beginning with the 2012-2013 season. Hall is a 1979 graduate of Herndon High School and served as the head coach of the Hornets basketball team for 18 years from 1990 to 2007. He led the Hornets to 319 wins, six district titles, a regional championship and an appearance in the 2006 Virginia State Finals. Director of Student Activities Jonathan Frohm said, "With his return to the helm, Coach Hall and the Herndon Hornets look to continue the tradition of excellence that is Herndon Basketball."

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 55-37 victory over Gwynn Park Monday at the 39th Annual IAABO Invitational Tournament in Largo, MD. Gwynn Park was 6-0 coming into the game and ranked No. 19 by The Washington Post. The Seahawks (5-2) had another balanced team attack, as three players finished with double digits in scoring. Abigail Rendle scored a game-high 19 points, 12 rebounds, and six blocked shots. This was Abigail's third double double outing of the season. Caitlin Jensen finished with 11 points, (4/5 fg), (2/3 3pt), five rebounds, two steals, and one assist. South Lakes' boys basketball team ended a three-game losing skid at Herndon on Tuesday, defeating the Hornets 86-82 in a noisy nonconference game. The Seahawks (3-3) scored 30 points in the first period. D.J. Christian had 23 points to lead four starters in double figures. Herndon (4-3) was led by Patrick McLaughlin, who had 36 points and 16 rebounds. South Lakes next plays West Potomac in the opening game of a tournament at Wakefield High School on Tuesday, Dec. 27.
