March Madness, Virginia Style

Want to see Virginia teams in NCAA Tournament action? Act quickly, as two of them are No. 16 seeds. Plus, where to watch games in Reston.

March Madness is upon us! Have you filled out your bracket yet? Virginia flavor - James Madison, the No. 16 seed in the East Region, opens play Wednesday. The Dukes, who have not made the NCAA Tournament since 1994, got there by winning the Colonial Athletic Conference Championship Tournament, will play No. 16 seed Long Island University in a first-round game in Dayton at 6:45 p.m. The winner of that game goes on to a matchup with No. 1 seed Indiana on Friday. Virginia Commonwealth, a Final Four team two years ago, enters this year's NCAA Tournament as a No. 5 seed. The Rams (26-8), who got in with an at-large bid, will play No. 12 seed Akron - winner of the Mid-American Conference Tourney - in the late game (9:45 p.m.) Thursday in Auburn …

SLHS Girls Look Toward State Tournament

Seahawks lose to Edison in Northern Regional final.

The South Lakes High School girls basketball team's run through the Northern Regional came to a disappointing end Saturday in a 60-52 loss to Edison. However, the team, based on its spot in the Regional final, had already secured a place in the Virginia AAA Tournament. The girls are regrouping for a Friday meeting with Northwest Region champs Stonewall Jackson of Manassas in the state tournament opener. The quarterfinal game is at 6:45 p.m. at Robinson High School. If South Lakes advances, later round games are at Virginia Commonwealth University's Seigel Center.  Stonewall Jackson is 23-3 and has not lost a game since Dec. 28. After four straight tournament games that came down to a margin of three points or fewer, South Lakes (23-5) …

SLHS Basketball: Boys Out, Girls Dominate

No. 20 Seahawks girls defeat Marshall by 58 points in Liberty District tournament opener.

The 2012-13 basketball season ended for South Lakes High School's boys basketball team Tuesday in a 52-45 loss at Fairfax in the quarterfinals of the Liberty District Basketball Tournament. The boys finish the season 9-14 overall, 6-8 Liberty. Sophomore Brandon Kamga led the team with 17 points. The top-seeded girls team had an easy time with Marshall in its 78-20 quarterfinal victory. The Seahawks (20-3 overall, 13-2 Liberty) were leading 27-0 after the first quarter and held a 43-5 margin at halftime. South Lakes had 27 steals and eight blocks.  In the semifinals, the girls play No. 4 seed Madison at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at South Lakes.

Basketball: SLHS Girls Earn Top Tourney Seed

Seahawks cap regular season with victory over Stone Bridge, earn No.1 seed in Liberty District Tournament.

South Lakes girls basketball team defeated Stone Bridge 59-53 Friday in its last regular-season game of 2013. The No. 16 Seahawks finish the regular season 19-3 (12-2 Liberty District). They will enter the Liberty District tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Seahawks will play Marshall at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home. The semifinals and final game will also be held at South Lakes later in the week. The Seahawks were led by Abigail Rendle with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Gabrielle Schultz (eight points, 13 rebounds) and Princess Aghayere (eight points, 12 rebounds) also were big contributors to the team. Basketball: SLHS Boys Win, Girls Lose

Madison girls halt Seahawks' winning streak.

Boosted by Brandon Kamga's 26 points, the South Lakes Seahawks defeated Madison 63-51 Tuesday. It was the fifth straight game in which the sophomore guard scored 20 points or more. Madison was led by Phillip Davine with 23 and Patrick Murphy with 13. South Lakes improves to 9-12 overall (6-7 Liberty District). Madison is now 7-13 (5-8 Liberty). Next up: South Lakes' final regular-season game of 2013, 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Stone Bridge. Madison plays at Fairfax, 7:30 p.m. Friday. Basketball: SLHS Girls Keep Rolling

Seahawks crush Marshall for sixth straight win.

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team won its sixth straight game Friday, rolling over Marshall 45-32 on the road. The No. 17 Seahawks were led by Abigail Rendle with 22 points and five rebounds. The Seahawks improve to 17-2 overall, 10-1 Liberty District. Marshall remains winless in the conference at 0-12. The Statesmen are 4-16 overall. Boys basketball The Seahawks lost to Marshall 65-46 on Friday.  Brandon Kamga led South Lakes with 23 points. Marshall had three players with double figures, including Grant Leibow, with a team-high 16 points. South Lakes is 8-12 overall, 5-7 Liberty. Basketball: SLHS Girls Win Fifth Straight

Seahawks avenge January loss to Fairfax by winning 50-38 Tuesday.

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team won its fifth straight game when it toppled Fairfax 50-38 at home Tuesday. The Seahawks, led by Abigail Rendle with 14 points and 7 rebounds, avenged January's 49-45 loss to Fairfax.  The Rebels were led by Kylie Murphree and Alex Wendling, each with 11. South Lakes, No. 17 in this week's Washington Post rankings, led 29-16 at halftime but Fairfax went on a 13-0 run to start the second half. Wendling scored eight of those points, including two three-pointers. South Lakes rallied in the end, though, outscoring the Rebels 19-6 in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory. South Lakes improves to 16-2 (9-1 Liberty District) and sits in first place in the conference. Fairfax falls to 12-7, 7-4 …

Basketball: SLHS Girls Defeat Langley

Seahawks win fourth straight to hold on to Liberty District lead.

South Lakes High School's girls basketball team outscored Langley 18-9 in the fourth quarter to topple the Saxons 51-43 on the road. It was the fourth straight win for the Seahawks, who are ranked No. 17 by the Washington Post this week. South Lakes sits atop the Liberty District with an 8-1 district (15-2 overall). The Saxons are now 8-9, 4-5 Liberty. SLHS Junior center Abigail Rendle had a game-high 15 points, 9 rebounds, 8 blocks, 5 steals and 2 assists. Junior guard Caitlin Jensen made key free throws in the fourth quarter and finished with nine points and two rebounds. Langley was led by Kaelin Testa with 11 points and Jessica Stewart with 10. The South Lakes Boys Basketball team's three-game winning streak ended on Tuesday with a 57-44 loss to Marshall. Marshall (9-3, 4-1 Liberty District) outscored the Seahawks 29-16 in the second and third quarters to pull away. Brandon Kamga led South Lakes with 12 points. Marshall was led by Towner Hale with 13. South Lakes is now 6-7 (3-3 Liberty District) and hosts Madison at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Girls Basketball: Caitlin Jensen led the Seahawks with 19 points as the team dominated Marshall 69-32 on Tuesday. SLHS Girls Basketball Streak Ends

Boys defeat Fairfax for Liberty District win.

South Lakes High School girl's basketball's 10-game winning streak came to an end on Friday as the Fairfax topped the Seahawks 49-45 at South Lakes. South Lakes had not lost since West Springfield defeated them by one point on Nov. 29. Fairfax (9-3, 4-0) was powered by Kylie Murphree, who had a season-high 28 points. The Seahawks (11-2 overall, 4-1 Liberty District), were coming off the championship in the IAABO Holiday Classic, which helped them earn a No. 14 ranking by the Washington Post. South Lakes was led by Abigail Rendle and Gabrielle Schultz with 11 points each. Next up for the Seahawks, at home against Marshall, 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Boys basketball Brandon Kamga scored 20 points to lead South Lakes past Fairfax 55-51 on Friday. …
