South Lakes High School's baseball team notched an 8-3 win over Thomas Jefferson on Tuesday at home. The game was the final Liberty District meeting between the Seahawks and the Colonials as the Colonials will be changing districts next year. Seahawks pitcher Bobby Rae Allen picked up his third win of the season with a complete game performance. The action started early with the Colonials getting runners on first and second with no outs in the first inning but were denied any runs by great Seahawks pitching and defensive play. The Seahawks wasted no time scoring. Matt Wojciechowski led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored on a JoJo Lear double for the first run of the game. South Lakes Baseball begins with 2-0 loss at Herndon.
The South Lakes Seahawks opened their 2013 season with a 2-0 loss to Herndon on Friday. Herndon picked up one run inthe bottom of the fourth and another run in the bottom of the fifth to complete all the scoring in this close game of crosstown rivals. South Lakes senior Bobby Rae Allen pitched a solid game, going five strong innings. South Lakes junior Terry Petersen came in as relief and pitched a scoreless sixth inning. The Seahawks’ play of the game came in the fourth inning. With bases loaded and one out, Allen caught a line drive and with a quick relay to sophomore first baseman Kyle King, the Herndon runner was caught off first base for the inning ending double play. Area baseball players and their families hosted a group of Russian players last weekend in a goodwill event sponsored by the Fairfax County Baseball Council. Herndon Optimist Youth Baseball (HOYB), Reston Little League (RLL) and Northern Fairfax County Babe Ruth (NFC Babe Ruth) welcomed the group of 31 players ages 8 to 15, who came from St. Petersburg to the Washington, DC, area. The players took part in fundamentals training, a scrimmage and team meals (including American specialities such as Sno-cones) at Reston Brown's Chapel Park. Nitro, the Northern Fairfax County (NFC) Babe Ruth 13U All Star Baseball team, ended its run in the state championship tournament in Summit Point, WV over the weekend. Nitro lost two games over the weekend in two 8-7 losses that came down to the final inning. The tournament was double elimination. The first loss was to Brunswick; the second, to Williamsburg . The team is managed by Shawn Boynton, and coached by R.J. House and John Broussard. NFC Babe Ruth pulls players from the Reston, Herndon and Chantilly areas of Fairfax County.

Northern Fairfax County's Babe Ruth 13U All Stars dominated its first game of the state tournament with a 9-0 victory over District 5's Greenwood Wednesday. Nitro was outstanding at the plate, with RBIs being driven in by the following players: Dillon Suzuki, Jake Peterson, A.C. Boynton, Spencer Buehler, Luke Stievater, Matthew Knox, and Matthew House. Defensively, the team turned in impressive performances, with A.C. Boynton pitching strong for the first four innings, and Spencer Buehler closing the game. Nitro, the 13U All Star Team from the Northern Fairfax County Babe Ruth Prep will advance to this week's state tournament after winning the district 13U All Star Tournament on Sunday. The league held its District 13U double elimination last weekend at Stratton Woods Park in Reston. Games were held Thursday through Sunday, even in the grueling weekend heat. The Nitro routed the Arlington Thunder, 20-11. Nitro advances to the State Tournament this Thursday in Summit Point, WV, as a top seed. Seahawks hope to improve on last season's six wins.
Even though South Lakes High School's varsity baseball team has started the season with two losses (13-3 to Herndon and 16-0 to McLean), coach Galvin Morris remains optimistic about the young team. With only five seniors on this year’s roster, South Lakes will depend on the contribution of its underclassmen throughout the season. Senior athlete Ryan Forrest, who is a also a top South Lakes wrestler, led Seahawk batters last season in batting average (.346) and hits (18) and posted an on-base percentage of .435. “Ryan brings his wrestling mentality to our baseball program. Legendary baseball player Hank Aaron will be honored by Reston's Martin Luther King Jr. Cultural Foundation at its Dream Makers Gala at the Hyatt Regency Reston on Thursday. The MLK Jr. Cultural Foundation is a nonprofit that raises money to award scholarships to area minority students. Fourteen deserving students will receive their scholarships at the event. The foundation was awarded a 2011 Best of Reston Award in April for its service to the community. Aaron, who began his career in the Negro Leagues, is best known for breaking Babe Ruth career home run record in 1974.
