Store at Spectrum's last day is Thursday.
Reston's Barnes & Noble will shut its doors for good Thursday. Most of the merchandise that has been on markdown since December is gone from the store and many shelves have been dismantled. There is some merchandise still available - such as CDs in the music department and bestseller-list books - as those will likely be shipped to a nearby location's inventory at the last minute. In any case, time is running out if you have been meaning to visit. The Spectrum Starbucks will remain open. The Container Store is set to open in the bookstore space this fall. I invite you to visit Algonquin Redux tomorrow, February 27, where I'll be publishing a post about the closing of the Reston Barnes & Noble, "A Market Too Perfect for Profit." I quote the Reston Patch, and you'll also be able to read in advance the passage that's an "unapologetic shout-out" to Reston from my novel, THE NAVIGATOR, coming in June from Forge Books, Macmillan Publishers.   more ›
Barnes & Noble closing in February, but attached coffee shop will remain.
The Starbucks location at the Spectrum will remain open even though Barnes & Noble will be closing its doors in late February, a Starbucks spokeswoman confirmed. The coffee shop is next door to the bookstore, with access to each other through a large interior opening. There had been some concern from the community that the Starbucks location would close as well - even though Reston is home to five Starbucks stores. Barnes & Noble announced last month it would close its Reston location after failing to agree to lease terms with shopping center owner Lerner Enterprises. A Container Store will open in its place in fall of 2013. Keep up with all Reston business news by subscribing to our free daily newsletter

Cleared shelves, big markdowns as store prepares for February closing.
There are huge markdowns at Reston's Barnes & Noble as the store prepares to close at the end of February. A large portion of the store's merchandise is between 30 and 50 percent off, and some shelves have been cleared of stock altogether. The store announced last month that its lease was not renewed and it would be closing at the end of February. Lerner, the owner of the Spectrum shopping center where Barnes & Noble is located, says a Container Store will open in the space in the fall of 2013. The Spectrum is also slated to undergo a massive renovation into a mixed-use, high density location. Planned redevelopment of this shopping center includes the following: Land Bay A is planned for 546 dwelling units, 255 hotel rooms, 172,000 square …

If local residents had spent actual money in the store instead of just hanging out then the store would still be there- Java Master is right this is about B&N's profitability- they are in contraction mode because people buy their books ONLINE.   more ›
Big box stores need to do a big business in order to sign a big lease.
I am a writer. So, naturally, I am a reader. I taught myself to read and devoured Ramona the Pest and the Little House books before kindergarten was over. My husband is impressed that if I like a book, I can plow through 500 pages in a weekend. Like many people in Reston, I could spend many a day at Barnes & Noble and the late Books-A-Million browsing, flipping, reading and buying. But lately? Not so much. I don't think I have made more than a handful of purchases in the last two years. Much like music and news, books have become personal. We can pick the music we like and send it right to our phones and iPods. An entire library can be stored on an iPad. All you have to do is hit a search button and the name of that book that you heard …

Unlike the closing of Books A Million, this business decision had nothing to do with the current trends in the book market. The Reston B&N was always packed with customers. It provided a great excuse to visit that part of Reston as it provided a wonderful experience to residents of all ages. If the owner of Spectrum thinks he'll get the same sustained traffic for the Container Store, he's …   more ›
Reston store will close at the end of February, and most book lovers are quite upset.
Restonians will soon be without a bookstore, news that is not sitting well with shoppers who frequent Barnes & Noble. The store at Reston's Spectrum Center will close at the end of February, Barnes & Noble officials said on Tuesday. The Container Store will open in that spot later in 2013, said a spokesman for Lerner Enterprises, which owns the shopping center. Barnes & Noble said it wanted to stay, but could not reach a lease agreement with Lerner. In comments on Reston Patch and on Reston Patch's Facebook page, book lovers voiced their opinion on the change. "I love bookstores and specifically B&N. I cherish those days especially in winter when I can go there and enjoy quiet time thumbing through books, magazines, and cards while sipping…
