Reston-trained dancer leaves soon for Russia—and a film is being made about her career.
Keenan Kampa, a Vienna dancer who trained at the Reston Conservatory Ballet and is the first American to dance with the Mariinsky Ballet, will leave in June for her new assignment in St. Petersburg, Russia. Local filmmaker Ken Ferguson has followed Kampa, 23, for months, creating footage that he hopes to make into a movie about how Kampa went from preschooler taking ballet at a shopping center to a renowned dancer. Ferguson showed his work so to an audience at the Hyatt Regency Reston last week. He hopes to produce the finished product into a film titled American Ballerina: An Improbable Journey to Russia. Reston-trained ballerina about to return to Russia to dance with Mariinsky Ballet.
Keenan Kampa, a dancer with the Boston Ballet who grew up in Oak Hill and trained with the Reston Conservatory Ballet, will return to Russia to dance with the esteemed Mariinsky Ballet this spring. Kampa will be the first American to join the Mariinsky. It will actually be a return to Russia for the 23-year-old, who in 2010 was the first American to receive the full diploma from the Vaganova Ballet Academy. Oak Hill's Keenan Kampa will leave Boston Ballet and dance with prestigious Mariinsky Ballet.
Keenan Kampa, a 22-year-old dancer with the Boston Ballet who grew up training with the Reston Conservatory Ballet, is making a move to a respected ballet company in Russia, The Washington Post reports. Kampa, a native of Oak Hill, will join the Mariinsky Ballet in June, becoming the first American to join the vaunted ballet company. She was also the first American to receive the Russian diploma from the Vaganova Ballet Academy, the same school that trained many notable dancers, including Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Kampa trained at Vaganova for three years. She was one of only a few non-Russians to be accepted to the nearly-300-year-old ballet school. She joined the Boston Ballet in 2010.
