Seahawks shut out 2-0.
South Lakes High School was unable to covert its offensive chances into goals Thursday as Langley defeated the Seahawks 2-0 in the semifinals of the Liberty District boys soccer tournament. South Lakes will still advance to the Northern Region tournament, which begins Tuesday. The bracket has not yet been announced. Junior midfielder Thomas Salomone and senior defender Rhys Howard scored for the Saxons. Both goals came as a result of throw-ins followed by shots. The Seahawks held Justin Gailani (9 goals), one of the region's top scorers, shotless and scoreless.
USTA grant helps Reston Association build courts sized for the smallest players.
Reston Association will formally open its six new kid-sized tennis courts on Saturday at 1 p.m. On hand for the ribbon cutting will be Reston founder Robert E. Simon (a longtime tennis fan), representatives from the United States Tennis Association and Slice,the mascot of the Washington Kastles tennis team. The courts replaces two regulation-sized tennis courts at North Shore Tennis. A $17,000 grant from the USTA helped to build the Quickstart courts, sized for children 10 and under. The North Shore 10 and Under Courts will feature bleachers for families and storage lockers. Currently, instructors carry all their equipment –including child-sized racquets, balls and a net to courts each time.

Boys and girls dominate Liberty meet.
South Lakes High School's boys and girls track teams each won the Liberty District meet, which wrapped up Wednesday at South Lakes. Both teams won by very large margins. The girls won by nearly 100 points over the other seven teams, while the boys won by over 60 points. There were numerous all district honors and several individual district championships earned. Girls District Champions include Danielle Hale in the high jump, long jump, 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash; Kyannah Calhoun in the 400 meter dash; Augusta Durham in the 800 meter run; Devin Nieusma in the 3200 meter run; Sumiya Yates in the shot put:; and the girls 4 x 400 meter relay of Emily Lopynski, Haley Vaughn, Claire Nieusma, and Grace Gillen. South Lakes High School's boys soccer team defeated James Madison 1-0 Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Liberty District tournament. The Seahawks' lone goal came in the 20th minute, when junior Suli Dainkeh took a shot that hit the crossbar, but was rebounded and finished by senior Brian Kraus. "The shot felt right, I knew it as soon as I hit the ball," said Diankeh. "Didn't quite make it in, but Brian was right there to drive it home." The South Lakes' defense, led by Dylan Katz, kept Nick Baietti, the top scorer in the District (13 goals), shotless. The Seahawks (6-4-4-) had tied Madison 1-1 earlier in the season. Aubrey McCormick of "Big Break Atlantis" at course Friday for pavilion unveiling.
Aubrey McCormick, one of the cast members of the Golf Channel's Big Break, will host an open house at Reston National Golf Course on Friday as the club unveils its renovated clubhouse. The pavilion features new flat-screen televisions, furniture and exterior walls, says course spokesman Nick Lashinsky. McCormick is one of 12 golfers competing on the new season of Big Break Atlantis, which premiered Monday (and will air Monday nights at 9 p.m.). She will sign autographs for fans and offer tips to improve golfers’ games from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. McCormick will also work as an instructor at Reston’s Nike Golf Learning Center at Reston National this summer. Currently based in Reston, McCormick took up the game at age 18 and earned a …

McLaughlin named to all-District baseball team.
South Lakes baseball player Billy McLaughlin was named a first-team all- Liberty District selection. Ryan Forrest was named a second-team selection and Kyle King was named to the third team. Soccer: Liberty District tournament play begins Monday. The boys team, which finished the regular season 5-4-4 (3-1-3 Liberty) will host Madison. The girls (4-8-1, 1-6) will play at Langley. Track and field: South Lakes will hold the 2012 Liberty District Track and Field Championships Tuesday and Wednesday.

South Lakes' soccer star makes most of opportunity at high school, professional development level.

2008 grad and Division II player agrees to three-year deal with Oakland Raiders.
Olympic runner, longtime basketball coach among inductees to be honored at June 8 dinner.
Former Seahawk track star Alan Webb (SLHS '01) and former basketball coach Wendell Byrd will lead this year's class of inductees into the the South Lakes High School Sports Hall of Fame. Webb gained recognition at South Lakes beginning in 1999, when, as a sophomore, he broke Jim Ryun's national sophomore mile record of 4:07.8 by running 4:06.94. He later was the first high schooler to run a mile in less than 4:00 indoors. In 2001, Webb ran the mile in 3:53.43 to shatter Ryun's 36-year-old national high school record of 3:55.3. He also won the Virginia State High School title in the 800 meters (1:47.74) and became the fourth-fastest high schooler ever at that distance. Webb later competed (1,500 meters) at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens…
