Taxes are going up for homeowners in Fairfax County with the 2015 budget. Patch file photo.
Private Person April 23, 2014 at 11:17 am
There is plenty of "affordable" housing in Fairfax County. None of it, though, is managedRead More by the incompetent housing "authority." By their definition, that sort of housing must have granite and stainless kitchens, at least one bathroom for every bedroom and usually an array of amenities like an on-site gym. There are plenty of low-end starter condos selling for $200k and below -- most of which are in desirable locations like Reston, Herndon, Falls Church, Seven Corners and the like. No, they are not atop Tysons malls or Reston Town Center, but that's not what affordable means. The decoded version of "affordable housing" is posh housing for the takers who will gladly vote these crooks, who take your money and give it to the takers, back into office again and again. This county, and this country for that matter, is doomed.
Kim McCoy April 23, 2014 at 11:36 am
Jim Daniels, how dare you tell me that there are "plenty of counties near by" that I canRead More go to? I was born and raised here, my parents worked and paid taxes their whole adult lives here, we've worked and paid taxes here our whole adult lives, and our daughter was raised here and pays taxes here. Until Gerry Connolly showed up her from Boston, this county was exquisite in beauty, education, and thoughtful development. Since then, it has been nothing but sprawl, congestion, and over-taxation...Tell me Jim, are you from here?
Jim Daniels April 23, 2014 at 12:42 pm
"... but it has finally hit me that it's time to GET OUT while I still can (with what's left ofRead More my life's saving after what this county did to my family when we built our own home here)....the rest of you suckers who are willing to stay here and continue to fund your own demise...good on ya....." Kim McCoy (Centreville Patch, April 22, 2014 at 04:21 PM) So you weren't serious? Seems like it would be a win-win for all of us!
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Michigan's ban on affirmative action in college admissions.
Observor April 23, 2014 at 11:03 am
One of the primary reasons blacks lag in admission to elite colleges without affirmative action isRead More that a disproportionate number of them come out of horror show urban school systems where they are trapped by an unholy alliance of the teacher unions and the Democrat party. The DTC keeps the unions working regardless of incompetence and in return the unions bankroll the DTC with their members' dues money. Affirmative action is just a way to paper over that "inconvenient truth."
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:44 am
Let me say something as a graduate of the University of Michigan, who had the tougher road toRead More admission as a non-resident. The problem with affirmative action is how to quantify it. Michigan can have its pick of students from the elite private and public schools in and around Detroit, Chicago, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Schools in Detroit certainly don't offer the educational opportunities that a school like Detroit Country day, or public high schools elite suburbs like Winnetka, Illinois or Bethesda, Maryland do. But, is a kid from a very rural area in the U.P. any more prepared for U of M than a kid from Detroit? By the same token, a kid from a farm outside of Muskegon represents the same kind of diversity to a kid from Westchester County, New York as someone from Detroit.
Kent Frederick April 23, 2014 at 11:59 am
Observor, It may have been Walt Williams who said that the problem with affirmative action is thatRead More it can set up a kid to fail. Schools that serve large groups of minorities often do not prepare a kid for an elite school, whehter it's a private school like Harvard or Duke, or an elite public school like Michigan or Cal-Berkeley. He suggested that a student, regardless of race or color, should always select a school that is suited to his qualifications. Someone from an inner-city school in California would be better off going to a university in the California State University system, rather than a school in the University of California system. The idea is that he can succeed in college and move on to a successful career. If a person ill-prepared for Berkeley or UCLA attends either of those schools, he has a greater likelihood of flunking out and giving up on higher education. My father attended a 1-room school house until the 6th grade. He then attended a rural junior high and high school. He wound up going to a land-grant university 11 years after graduating from high school, courtesy of the GI Bill. Because of his going to a school that, while good in the field of agriculture, was an average university overall, he was able to move into management eventually transferred to Chicago. So, I attended a very good suburban high school that prepared me for the University of Michigan. If he had gone to a school for which he wasn't prepared, he could very well have dropped out, which would have meant no management opportunity or transfer to Chicago. I know a lot of very successful people who went to small, liberal arts colleges or public universities that aren't of the same caliber as Michigan, UCLA, or the University of Illinois. Yes, going to a school like Michigan, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern, or Stanford can lead to great opportunities. But, going to a non-elite college or university doesn't close the doors on those opportunities.
Fairfax kids could get more sleep under proposal.
Lisa Ross April 22, 2014 at 03:59 pm
Cannot wait for this to happen. Wish it could have happened before my first child graduated lastRead More June. She was so tired that she was napping after school at least 3 days a week. Teens should not need naps! And she was in her room with lights out and no electronics at 9 pm. I know because I was insistent on it. But you cannot make most teens fall asleep that early. Their body chemistry does not allow it. And the research shows that kids DO get more sleep in places where they have made this shift to start high schools later. Opponents said the same thing in Arlington County and were proved wrong. Kids are sleeping more. Also, this article says that "in 4 of the scenarios, teenagers could gain an additional 30 minutes to an hour of sleep on weeknights." This is not exactly right -it could be more than 30 minutes to an hour because another thing that was done in these proposals was to reduce the time teens spend at school before school starts. No reason to sit around school for 30-40 minutes before anything starts. Under these proposals, most should not get there much more than about 10 minutes before school starts so bus pick-up times will change more than start times alone indicate. Yay!
thenaturalhorseman April 23, 2014 at 08:13 am
Yes please! My kids would still go to sleep at the same time and would love to not have to catchRead More the bus at 5:50am!
The Convict April 23, 2014 at 11:01 am
Parent your children, Parents. If your kid needs more sleep, then get them to bed earlier.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.

If they did they would know that it is the state who determines how to integrate the standards into their existing standards. http://www.corestandards.org/ The Common Core website provides links to each of the 44 states Department of Education websites which provide information about how the standards are being implemented, assessments etc. http://www.corestandards.org/standards-in-your-state/ The Michigan Department of Education link is http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-28753_64839_64848---,00.html or http://www.michigan.gov/mde How the Common Core standards are taught, the curriculum developed, and the material used by teachers is led entirely at the state and local levels. At the most basic level all educational standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level in order to move on the next level.
Jennifer April 23, 2014 at 12:58 pm
I read every single link on the Common Core website, and there is virtually NO information on it. ItRead More says that the Common core was developed by the State Governpor... not federally funded. You can search all you want ont the CC website, and you will never find the list of people that Steven Lee gave you above. It does not disclose how the development of these sandards was funded, and by whom. It SAYS educators were involved. So you believe that, and it is enough for you. I does NOT disclose how federal funds ARE being used to prod states into accepting the CC standards. It is a PR website, and nothing more. If I am skeptical about something, I try to find unaffiliated sources of information. And I read editorials pro and con. And I read the skeptics, and fact-check. I immediatly rule out any post mentioning "illuminati", aliens, eugenics, or that seems blatantly racist or otherwise extreme. But I also have to say that although I allow that you have a different point of view, I can't say that you have provided me with any reasonable "facts" that I can follow up on. So you are welcome to your opinion, but I don't find it a helpful or persuasive one.

Dorie, stowing away on a plane is a crime. And no, the boy himself did not pose a threat. But theRead More fact that he (anyone) can get that close to a plane poses a threat. I agree with B. Dub 100%! How was this kid able to scale a fence and just walk right over to theRead More plane? TSA: for all the harassing you do in the terminal...you ain't all that!! As far as the kid being a runaway..maybe he does face some serious abuse issues at home. He's damn lucky to be alive. But, I raised three boys, and a 16 year old boy can runaway for any collage of reasons. My kids never ran away but, I'm wondering if the fact that the plane was going to HAWAII has anything to do with it. It sounds a little compulsive to me. CPA need good follow up on this. Thank you lucky stars kid!

Agranon - I'm a moron because I am tired of everybody and his mother trying to put themselves inRead More every story? Then so be it - I'm a moron. To be honest, I am also really tired of all the people that were compelled to run the Boston Marathon because "I had to finish for all those who couldn't." Get over yourself. It was a tragedy. Those responsible should be ripped apart by dogs. I sincerely hope the families of those affected can move on somehow. But how does Mary Jane Smith running the marathon help ANYBODY but herself? She's not doing it for "those who can't". She's doing it to maybe get on TV and she's probably feeling a little sanctimonious because she ran 26.2 miles and you didn't. It's like, "what did YOU do to help these people?" Same as you - nothing.

I've studied science and religion (many degrees, certifications etc.) taught religion, worked inRead More observatories, as an a night assistant and as an astronomer and I would like to know just what your belief system is. I suspect you are Hindu and you believe in Kali. When Obama laid of 50,000 of us working for NASA and affiliates, he then gave full four year scholarships to 20,000 Hindu interns that took our NASA careers. I was told this from directly within the Indian Government because I moderate an international group for astronomy and aerospace technology. We here going to continue funding the ISS while handing our seat over to that government yet retain the sole cost of removing it when it is retired. Meanwhile China, Russia and India each are working on their versions of our now retired space shuttle as we opt for technology obsoleted and shelved before our first shuttle launch. Now the Hindu from that group are calling the Christian faith a superstition (yeah, in a science and technology group) that needs to be wiped from the face of the Earth and replaced with the Mother Goddess Kali, also a Goddess of Death I believe. I get the impression you are one of those....??? Comet Hale Bopp was a somewhat recent (to me) comet that you could have photographed and measured its element and proved yourself wrong. You could still go back and look at photos other such as myself actually took. The amount of force it would have taken to blow a comet away from earth with that amount of mass and that type of velocity, would have left only rubble here. So a Kali believer right???? I don't suppose you are also a Thuggee? I just haven't quite heard your version of faith and science the way you have put it so I am curious.
