This Week: Choice of West Coast Swing or Contra Dancing, Dog Wash for Charity and More

A look at what's going on this week in Reston.

Learn about the science behind food preservation, safety precautions, kitchen set up, and jar and equipment prep as well as food and recipe selection.

There will be a "dry" demo of the correct procedure for filling jars with food to be canned and ample time for questions. Instructor: Diane Blust. Co-sponsored by Reston Community Center. Reservations required by January 6. $5/person RA members, $8/person Non-members.

Contra Dancing, Saturday, Jan. 11, 8 p.m., Reston Community Center.
Contra dancing is informal dancing related to square dancing, done in lines facing each other, with partners standing opposite each other and moving up and down the line together. The caller teaches each dance carefully and walks the dancers through it before it is done to live music (here, fiddle, keyboard, banjo, and
clarinet). A beginner's workshop starting about 7:15 preceding the dance is
helpful to newcomers. Fun is had by all ages, all experience levels. You do not need to come with a partner.

West Coast Swing Night, Saturday, Jan. 11, 7 p.m., Colvin Run Dance Hall.
Dance to your favorite contemporary and classic West Coast Swing music featuring special guest instructor Arjay Centeno. From 7 to 8 p.m., there will be an Intermediate West Coast Swing lessontaught by Centeno. From 8 to 11 p.m. the dance will be hosted by guest DJ Dave Moldover.

The cost is $15 for the entire event, which includes lessons and loaded snack bar. No experience or partner needed for the dance
