This Week: Annual Reston Holiday Parade, Tree Lighting, Turkey Trail

The Reston Holiday Parade, Christmas Tree lighting, as well as an interfaith Thanksgiving service and Thanksgiving trail highlight this week's events.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. On Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m. the United Christian Parish will host their annual interfaith Thanksgiving Eve service. Each year UCP hosts a community Thanksgiving Eve worship service which allows faith communities to come together in celebration of the diversity of peoples and faiths. Organizations or individuals to be represented this year include: Del. Ken Plum (D-36), Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill), the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, Shoreshim Community, St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Martin Luther King, Jr. Church, Beloved Yoga, Cornerstones, the Washington West Film Festival and Rev. Joan Bell-Haynes and Rev. Lloyd Kinzer of the United Christian Parish.

This year's service will be in the new Sanctuary, and open to , everyone. You don't need to be part of any of the participating faith communities or organizations.

A social gathering will follow the service.

Continuing another tradition, prior to the 11:00 a.m. start, thousands of commemorative Reston Town Center jingle bells will be handed out to children along the route as they wait for the parade to begin.

At least sixty groups, amounting to more than 500 participants, will participate.

The Reston Holiday Parade is held rain or shine, and since 1991 it has been an annual tradition on the day after Thanksgiving at Reston Town Center.

Christmas Tree Lighting. After the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus will stay for visits and photos until 4:30 p.m. and will return for the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at 6:00 p.m.

A half-hour Sing Along of traditional Christmas songs and horse-drawn carriage rides begin at 6:30 p.m.

Turkey Trail. The Walker Nature Education Center will host their Turkey Trail on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 11 a.m. to noon.

Attendees can use their logic skills to follow a trail of clues left by a “wild” turkey to see where they lead. The trail affords you an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating birds.
