Summer's Done, School's In and Reston Triathlon's a Go

What you need to know for the week of Sept. 2.

Well, that's a wrap for summer 2013.

The "official" last day of summer is Sept. 21, but for school children and their parents, Tuesday starts the 2013-14 year. Time for pencils, books, new shoes, football and...

School year look-ahead  - In Reston, Terraset and Sunrise Valley Elementary schools will start large renovation projects later in the year. At Sunrise Valley, there is an interim principal, longtime FCPS educator Tim Stanley, who came out of retirement to lead the school. Dogwood Elementary also welcomes new principal Terry Dade and Armstrong welcomes new principal James Quinn.

Football! - South Lakes opens the season Monday at home against Westfield. Herndon High hosts Mount Vernon. Game times are 7:30 p.m.

Triathlon turns 30 - On Sunday, the Reston Triathlon will move through South Reston for the 30th year. It's come a long way. Click here for details. The race could still use volunteers. Click here to sign up.

Plum Running Again - Join Del. Ken and Jane Plum at the annual Plum Family Picnic and Pre-Election Rally on Saturday.  Plum, who has represented Reston in the Virginia general assembly since 1982, is up for re-election in November but is running unopposed. Picnic is 3:30 p.m. at North Hills Picnic Pavilion. Details here.
